After several years of reading books in the Kindle app on my tablet, I'm thinking about getting a Kindle since the tablet is hard to read outdoors in the sun, no matter how I tweak the display setting. The current/new ones are more than $100, which is more than I want to spend. Ebay a dizzying assortment of models/generations. I don't need the latest and greatest version. Any recommendations for a slightly older Kindle or a less-expensive e-reader?

Kindle paperwhite is the cheapest version and works just fine with me. I do prefer the backlite version as it gives you a better variety of reading environments. I do not both with all the fancy (and expensive versions).

I also have a kindle paperwhite. It is a newer version but felt it is worth the $$ because of being able to read in the sun and have some water resistance. They say waterproof but I wouldn't test it. It is a nice small size and has really long battery life. My old nook died after a few hours so was kind of useless for long trips

I have the Paperwhite also. Amazon does have refurbished ones for $108.

I think the regular Kindle is fine also and that is $89.

At the time I was buying mine, I just figured I would spend the little extra and get the better one for an extra, I think it was $30 at the time.

I just think the Kindle is so easy to use and intuitive that I didn’t consider other options.

If you don't need to use an e-reader for internet, just reading mobi / epub / pdf files the Kindle refurbished paperwhite works fine

it is more expensive ($189 - $230 after you pay shipping), but I use ONYX BOOX Poke 3.

It has a six inch diagonal screen, but is lighter weight than my cell phone. As an ereader, it is easy to read in bright daylight, but includes screen lights (two types so that you can decide if you want to avoid blue lighting or not) to make it readable in darker settings. (More often that not I am using the screen lighting, but at a very low level.) It has an android processor which allows you to add any apps that you wish including Kindle. (I have both Kindle and Nook apps installed.) You can also access your email, read newspapers (not the best, but usable) or add any other app available in the Google Play store.

Note - If you buy your ebooks via the sources Brett mentioned, you can use the built in reading app which is the most flexible of any reading app bar none. I just find it easier to buy books via Kindle and Barnes and Noble.

I bought a Kindle Paperwhite on Prime Day and have mixed reactions to it. I like that it makes reading easy in sunlight and darkly lit restaurants. But the interface of the Android Kindle app is far superior to the Kindle's, and I still need my tablet to read library ebooks in Hoopla. Also, I was surprised there is no off button; you can only turn the screen off. Consequently, I already know a charge doesn't last nearly as long as advertised.

Hi Linsj,
You can convert your Kindle Paperwhite into an Android Device if you so wish. Here's how:

How to Jailbreak Kindle Paperwhite 2021 -
Epubor Ultimate.

Enjoy!

Give it some time - you will learn to like it.

I used to download free books from the library on mine - our library had information on how to do it. It was pretty easy. Once hubs started reading on a Kindle, we share books, but that was harder to do with the library books because of the 2 week time frame you had to return. I read faster than he does and he might not want to read it immediately.

We buy bargain books on Amazon and BookBub. We currently have 594 books in our Kindle library. We both have Kindle Paperwhites and Kindle Fire tablets. We tend to use the Paperwhite ones most - especially when traveling because they are smaller and work so well when sitting on the beach. :) I do like the 10" Fire for indoor reading because it seems more like reading a hardback book - more words on the page. I also like reading my e-books on my iPad mini, but the Fire and iPad both pick up glare and do not work as well outside.

I started with the regular Kindle not long after they came out and progressed to the Paperwhite and love it. I bought hubs one and now he reads more than ever! In August 2019, there was a sale for the Kindle Fire HD 10" for $99, so I bought 2 of those for us to take on vacation. We had not used Android devices before, so basically only downloaded books and some movies to watch on the plane onto our Kindle Fire tablets. If I could download Firefox browser and sync all my favorites on it, I would use it more for browsing too. One of our sons gave me a hand-me-down iPad mini in 2019 and I use it for browsing on a tablet sometimes. Since I had an iPhone it was a super easy transition and with iCloud I could just add my apps to it, including Firefox with no learning curve. While we both are pretty tech savvy, we really are not tablet people - we prefer a laptop for browsing and communication. We can also save email history and documents on it.

Thankis, Richard. Although I'm tech savvy, I avoid jailbreaking anything. Too much can go wrong.

Hi Linsj,

I think Jailbreak is the wrong term to use - I think convert is a better term. I coverted my wife's Kindle Fire with no problems. She loves her new Android based tablet.

My understanding is Kindle Paperwhite is still the best in the sun. I have an old one that still works well (though I often forget about it and just use my phone instead).

Love my kindle ppaoerwhite so much-and I think the batter lasts maybe 10 days per charge. Libby works beautifully as an app to download and hold library books. Super easy.
