I am thinking about buying my sister a tablet. It is between the Kindle 7" HDX and a refurb IPAD 2.

Anybody have the Kindle HDX? You like it? It would be her only Internet, and she is not very computer or web saavy. Can you get a keyboard or keyboard/case for this tablet?

The reason I am also thinking about IPad2 is because it is the only IPAD other than the current one that Apple has pledged to still support.

Thanks for any help/opinions.

Hi Fern,

I have a Kindle 8.9 HDX and love it. I bought it mainly for my wife who is not very tech savvy either. The Mayday button is very helpful, and for her, is worth the price of admission.

It's light, fast and has beautiful colors.

Yes, you can get a Bluetooth keyboard - here's a link to a combination Bluetooth Keyboard/Case - http://www.amazon.com/KeyBook-Bluetooth-Keyboard-Kindle-Tablet/dp/B00FNMEYF2

It has an Amazon version of Android, so it's not a full-fledged Anrdroid unit but for your sister, that shouldn't matter. She'll be able to do all the basic things like surfing the internet, email, sharing pictures, ereader.

I'm not familiar with the iPad so I'll let other Tuggers comment on that.

My vote would be for the Kindle 7 HDX.

Best regards,

Richard

My wife loves her ipad and hasn't used her laptop since she started using the ipad. I decided to jump in to the tablet dealio and was looking at a off branded tablet and then after asking here at tug considering a kindle hd 8.9 at amazon for $229. If you buy this at the $229 you are agreeing to let amazon send your kindle advertising so that was a turn off for me. Also I found out that the kindle has a hard time using other web browsers and some android apps.

What I ended up purchasing is a refurbed Asus 10.1 MeMo smart pad with 16 gb with case and 90 day warranty for about $200.00 on amazon. From what I read I can use an app to load all of my amazon cloud to this tablet, use google chrome, hotmail, netflix and pretty much any thing else that I currently use. Since I like my laptop better than my wifes ipad it seems that Im only going to be using the tablet when traveling.

The other tablet that I was very interested in is the Microsoft Surface RT with 64 gb on sale for $299. Even if you can'y run all of the apps the 64mb of internal storage means you can load this tablet up with alot of entertainment.

I bought the Kindle Fire HDX (7") back in November and I really like it. I previously had an Ipad 1. The price on the Kindle was too good to pass up. Btw, I noticed that they have a $30 coupon today, which makes the price $199. Coupled with Amazon Prime, the Kindle makes a lot of sense. I'm a cheapskate so I paid the lower price and agreed to get the advertising, but I have found it wasn't obtrusive at all (it's on the log in screen only) and some of the offers have been for discounted books and music that I have used (downloaded a couple of albums for $2.00 each).

As far as the case/keyboard questions - I don't know about the keyboard, but I ordered a RooCase for about $15 that shuts the kindle off when you close it, can be used in either a horizontal or vertical orientation (uses a velcro strip), and comes with a stylus that comes in handy. http://www.amazon.com/rooCASE-Case-Amazon-All-New-Kindle/dp/B00FF31HLI/ref=pd_cp_e_3

I have used the "Mayday" button once and it worked as advertised. They answered my question quickly. It was very handy because you can ask your question without having to type it in. It just seemed more efficient.

I have RA, so I needed the smaller size for my hands. The light weight of the device far outweighs the smaller screen size for me. I took me a few days to adjust, but now it seems normal.

For me the primary reason for choosing the kindle was the promise of free content (Amazon prime and Kindle lending library), but I also liked that Amazon has stated that they are ok with people keeping their old devices and using them to obtain content. I hate that my very expensive Ipad 1, in pristine condition, is nearly a brick because I can't upgrade the operating system any more.

I'm on my third Kindle. I have the larger HDX. I love it, but would probably like an IPad also. I am pretty techy, so can't comment on which would be best for non-techy person.

I have a 7" Fire HD and DW has a Fire HDX 8.9 with the bluetooth keyboard case. Truth be told, I think I prefer the littler HD. It has an HDMI out port and just seems easier somehow. I did not bother with another browser. The included 'Silk' one seems to work fine to me. I still have an iPad 1 that is doing 'internet radio' duty at home.

I refuse to fault anyone's choice, 'cause any tablet beats travel with a laptop.
