I've tried for 2 years now to see the value of the Murphy beds. They are just way too big for the size of the living room. The couch is uncomfortable to sit on and the bed is smaller than a typical sofa bed. I fail to see any advanatge over a sofa bed, and IMO there are several disadvantages. (Also, the coffee table is nice, but it to is way too big for that size LR). I wish the board would go to the Bay Club and see their LR renovations....

I agree with everything you said. I might add that the chair is extremely uncomfortable. We had to bring in the lawn chair on the lanai for my husband to use. In spite of all the furniture problems, the Kauai Beach Club is still our favorite place to stay in Kauai.

The KBC murphy beds were installed after the board carefully considered the many owner complaints about how uncomfortable and unusable the traditional sofa beds were for sleeping. If you search the archives here on tug you can read some of those complaints.

Generally positive feedback was received during a trial period of the murphy beds, and the decision was made to move forward with a broad deployment during the normal renovation cycle.

I agree that the murphy beds are quite bulky for the room size, but there are always going to be tradeoffs. Overall I find the recent renovations at KBC to be quite tasteful and a great improvement from before.

we haven't looked at KBC, but we have used murphy beds at several of the timeshares in Honolulu.

It was strange to have the bed taking up much of the room when it was down, but it was nice to have a real bed, and when it was up it was nice to have a furnished studio -- and the change was pretty quick from one to the other.

We have never had much use for sofa beds on vacation.

Agreed. The sofa isn't the most comfortable for sitting, but if you are only using the efficiency half, the murphy bed is a much better option for sleeping.

I really don't see any difference between the mattress in the Murphy Bed and the mattress in a sofa bed. In any event, I would guess there are more people like me who don't use the living room as a bedroom than people that do, but the murphy bed takes up all that extra room 100% of the time. Probably would not be possible to make some with and some without...

We use the Murphy bed every year. Anyone with a family would (unless they are extremely close, ha.) It doesn't take up that much room. How much time are you spending on a couch in hawaii anyway? The lanai or the pool area are the places to be! I can watch TV on the mainland.

Everyone has his own opinion of things. We do not find the murphy beds to be an issue. When folded back, I did not consider that it was taking up all that much room. Like others have also said, we do not really use the sofa that much. In fact, we are out of the room far more than in the room; and when in the room, I personally prefer to sit out on the Lanai.

Like I said originally, I just don't see any advantage of the murphy bed over a sofa bed.

my experience with murphy beds is that they have regular mattresses rather than the thin sofa bed mattress, and sleep like regular beds. I would bet that most people would much rather sleep on a murphy bed.

DD15 finds the Murphy bed at KBC to be genuinely comfortable; she generally dislikes sofabeds.

For our family, this is a major advantage.

Maybe that's my problem when I looked at the mattress in my unit this year it was just a 4 inch sofa bed type one. Maybe others are diffferent...

We use it also...

We use the Murphy bed every year..

The last several times we went, we invited friends with a free place to stay. The privacy doors between the rooms and separate Murphy bed was ideal for this arrangement. No complaints from our guests.

We're going with the same friends next year because they bought a single "Come back return visit" package to return the favor and then we'll attempt to do back to back weeks to stay for two weeks instead of one.

For the first time, we'll get to try out the Murphy bed for a week to see how it compares to a sofa bed.

I find when I sleep on a murphy bed it has a flat mattress. When sleeping on a sofa bed I feel all the metal parts that are used to keep the mattress in the sofa when not in use. Given a choice I will sleep on the couch rather than the sofa bed. Personally, I like the murphy bed. But everyone has a right to have their preference.
