I know this is the timeshare thread but I have to say that we just returned from a week at this hotel using points. Of all the Marriotts and Ritz Carltons we have stayed in over the years this is by far the finest experience we have ever had. The hotel is drop dead gorgeous. Because hubby is platinum we were upgraded to a JW suite which was huge. What really makes this hotel special is the marvelous staff. Nothing was ever too much trouble for them. We never passed a single staff person without receiving a greeting and a smile. We upgraded and used extra points for Club 91 and that was worth every point we spent for the concierge lounge with 5 separate food presentations every day. The food here was so plentiful that we ate a full breakfast every morning and had lunch there every day we could. THat cut down on the meals we needed to take at the restaurants. Drinks were also included and we would go there for drinks and appetizers every night before dinner and would go up after dinner for desert and coffee. After the terrible experience we had at Frenchmans Reef last spring I think that the Frenchman's Reef staff should be sent to the JW Marriott to learn how to treat customers. I cannot recommend this hotel too highly.

That's good to hear. We're using points to stay two nights, April 19-21, at the JW before we head south to the Grand Mayan. Can you elaborate a little more on Club 91? I couldn't find anything about it on Marriott's website. Thanks.

Don

Kathy, on another thread it was mentioned the beach is virtually non-existent. How did you deal with this?

Thanks,
Suzzanne

Thank you Kathy (indeed, a neighbor)

My wife and I are planning to go there next February. (We will be using points and upgrading with either points or cash for Club 91)

When did you book it? I con't see any availibility for either January or February of '08 yet.

One thing we want to do while we are there is go into the jungle and see some Mayan ruins. Should we rent a car to do that or are there organized trips available?

There are numerous, reputable tour organizers for Mayan ruin trips. THe good ones (like Chitzen Itza sp?) are about 2 hours away. I personally wouldn't rent a car in Mexico and drive that trip on my own, even if I spoke Spanish......

Answers to questions

1. I do not have my MR ID and password with me right now. Give me a couple of days to get it at the office and then I will check to see when the points were withdrawn from my acct and I can tell you when we booked the trip.

2. Use the web site www.cancunmx.com and look at the tours that are available. We booked two tours on line and were happy with them. THey pick you up at your hotel about 7:30 AM and take you to a central location where you pay your balance and board a bus with other folks for the tour. We did the all inclusive for Chichen Itza and Xel-Ha/Tulum. Both trips last about 12 hours so it is a long day. Both sights are worth seeing since they are totaly different. THe Xel-Ha/Tulum trip combines about 2 hrs in Tulum with 4 hours at Xel-Ha which is a ecological water park.

3. I would definitely not bother renting a car. There is a bus which runs up and down the main road every few minutes. It cost 65 pesoes each and there are stops every couple of blocks. IT was easy and quick and cheap and believe me if we (who do not speak a word of Spanish) can take the public bus then anyone can. If you do Club 91 then transportation to and from the airport in the Marriott van is included in the Club 91 upgrade.

4. Club 91 includes airport transportation. You will get a E Mail from the Club 91 folks prior to your trip and you E Mail them back with the time and flight information and they will confirm your pick up at the airport. The day before departure make a reservation for the van to the airport at the concierge desk.

5. Club 91 upgrades include the following:
1.Club 91 room on the top floor of the hotel.
2. R/T airport transportation
3. Club 91 with 5 food presentations a day (Breakfast, lunch, tea, cocktails and appetizers before dinner and dessert and coffee after dinner). We certainly found the food to be sufficient and did not need to have anything additional until a full meal at dinner.
4. Free internet access if you have your laptop.
5. Dedicated Club91 concierge to make reservations
6. You check in in the Club91 lounge so you don't have to stand in line with the rest of the hoi-poli.
7. DRINKS both alcholic and non alcholic.
8. We got a discount certificate wwhen we booked some spa service through the Club 91 concierge (15% off spa service)

6. Beach space is limited. They do have a lot of the open air covered huts to put a lounge chair in on the beach but there is not a lot of open sand. If you love to spread a towel on the sand and lie there you will be disapointed. I thought it was fine since I would come out of the ocean and head back to the pool to wash the salt water off and then go back to my comfy lounge chair around the pool.

Thanks Kathy for the information. I have a couple more questions for you, first, is the R/T airport transportation free or is there a fee? and second, how and where do you upgrade for Club 91?

Don

I think that the R/T transportation to the airport is $12.00 per person. I booked our trip with a marriott rep on the phone and I simply told her that I wanted to upgrade to Club91 at that time.

Thanks Kathy, I'll call a Marriott rep and ask them about Club 91. On the transportation, I emailed the JW a few weeks ago and I set us up with their airport transfer service which is $14 per person.

After reading about this hotel, I thought it would be a great place to celebrate my husband's BIG birthday in October. We have a hotel certificate that we must use by 11/17 so this would be perfect. I also planned to upgrade to Club 91 to make it even more special.

After unsuccessfully trying to do it online, I called Marriott. I was told that I couldn't book online because the hotel was only accepting Marriott "Stay Anytime" awards for that week. I was told I could redeem the certificate for five days and upgrade the room for another 25,000 points, but that would still not get us a Club 91 room.

After trying different October dates it was evident that the hotel was not taking any other type of rewards. Although the Marriott representative was trying to be helpful, it was not working out. He gave me a phone number and suggested I contact someone at Marriott Rewards. I did and was told that if I used another 86,000 points I might be able to upgrade the certificate and then use a significant number of points to upgrade the room, but again not to Club 91.

I went on the internet and tried to book the trip for November. However, I still could not do it. So I tried a variety of different dates throughout the year. Again, I could not use the award. None of the dates I used would be considered "high season" in Cancun.

Needless to say, I am very frustrated. :wall: Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to make this happen, or where else we can go that is as nice?

Thanks for letting me vent!

Bonnie

We booked our week using points in mid July 06

I called Marriott and there is no availability for Club 91 during the time we'll be at the JW. Seems we were a day late and a dollar short on this one. Oh well, 39 days and counting.

It seems to be true that the Club 91 is only taking "Stay Anytime" awards.

They seem to have pleny of "Premium Ocean View" rooms for a Standard Award (plus 5,000 points per day extra)

Yesterday, I was able to upgrade my Standard Award to Stay Anytime (via customer service. Takes a supervisor to do it)

We then booked a week in February '08 in the Club 91 (including $120 per day surcharge)
