We have just returned from a week’s vacation at Polo Towers in Las Vegas. This is our second stay at Polo Towers and we were looking forward to the room upgrades that had taken place over the past year. We were for the most part pleased with our unit’s new appearance. It has new rugs, new furniture, and granite countertops in the kitchen and bath room, new appliances, three new flat screen televisions, and new pictures on the walls. They replaced the bed in the lock off with a Murphy bed. There were some minor problems: the refrigerator door, for instance, hits the corner of an abutting wall when opened, if you do not hold it. Sooner or later, the wall is going to require repairs. A drawer in the bathroom scrapes against the cabinet door beneath it. Minor problems! All in all, we thought they did a good job at renovating.
That’s the good news. We did have a number of maintenance glitches, however, that we had not encountered on our last visit. When we entered our unit, it appeared not to have been cleaned: wastebaskets not emptied, beer cans on table, towels strewn on the bath room floor. We called the service desk and we were told the unit definitely had been signed off as cleaned. I invited them up to take a look and to convine them the unit was a mess. Housekeeping came and cleaned the unit from top to bottom. She did an outstanding job, which included changing the sheets and washing all the kitchen ware. We were wondering if the previous occupants had come back for showers and a few beers after checking out. I don’t know if this is possible; I would assume the room key would no longer work after checking out.
The air conditioner in the lock off, where our daughter and her husband were staying did not work. A call to the service desk was promptly answered with the arrival of a maintenance man. Unfortunately he was not qualified to repair it. A technician did arrive the following morning and by the time we returned in the pm, it was working fine.
The television in the lock off received only three channels, but we decided that we had complained enough, and the other TV’s worked fine.
Once we were comfortably settled in we enjoyed our unit to the fullest. Drinking our own freshly brewed coffee In the morning, eating our own prepared meals now and then, and enjoying a great view of the City Center complex going up across the street. I want to add that we think the staff is a real asset to Polo Towers: friendly, courteous, prompt to address problems.
We also enjoyed our time on the Strip, Downtown, and at Laughton. We visited most of the casinos, took in the American Modernism show, and had some pleasant dining experiences. Our daughter and her husband saw Mystere and did some mountain climbing in California and Nevada.
As an aside, we found the slots looser than usual in most of the casinos, and returned home under budget. Also, if you fly Southwest, and bring your laptop or have access to a computer, you can complete your boarding pass information early to get good seating, and the skycap will print it out for you when you arrive at the airport.
The Hawaiian Marketplace was as desolate this year as it was last year. Funny thing, though, every time we went through there, people were cleaning. It is probably the cleanest, emptiest place in Vegas.
We had a great time and look forward to next year.
