Just returned from a week at Grande Ocean

Wonderful weather, wonderful place. Any questions about the facility?

dear TUG "guest" laurac,

so come on, give us more.....

where did you go?
what did you do?
was there a breeze to mitigate the July HEAT we've been experiencing?
(June was unusually oppressive when we were there)
did you try any new restaurants?
did you go biking?
did you like your unit assignment, and where was it?
(because you get a different "feel" from different units)
did you meet any other Tuggers while there?
did you notice any changes at the resort?
and MOST importantly, did you meet Pool Bar Jim?

Hope you had a fantastic time! best, Marty (jme)

dear TUG "guest" laurac,

so come on, give us more.....

where did you go? Sea Pines, South Beach, Coligny Plaza, Harbourtown
what did you do? mostly, beach, pool, beach, pool, beach, pool
was there a breeze to mitigate the July HEAT we've been experiencing? yes. no clouds to be seen, and no rain. I was wishing for both around day 5 and 6 though.
(June was unusually oppressive when we were there)
did you try any new restaurants? yes, Skull Creek Boathouse (previously Boathouse II). Personally I liked it better previously.
did you go biking? yes, twice, sweat like pigs! But our first time biking on HHI, and we loved it. I think we might try to switch our week to June next year and hope for a bit less heat.
did you like your unit assignment, and where was it? 8742 Sand dollar building, with a view of the ocean in our oceanside unit!:D
(because you get a different "feel" from different units)
did you meet any other Tuggers while there? no
did you notice any changes at the resort? new toasters, and I think new coffee pots (we bring our own though)
and MOST importantly, did you meet Pool Bar Jim? Yes, we saw him almost every day. A nice guy to be sure, but DH and I agree his drinks are too weak. And expensive. The $6.95 margaritas at San Miguels though? Perfect!

Hope you had a fantastic time! best, Marty (jme)

The one thing I hope to never do again is do a Saturday check-in. I was in Publix for the first time ever on a Sat night and thought there was a hurricane coming in, there was such a frantic feel in the air , and very crowded. Then one guy said "I need to get some avocados", at which time I knew it was just regular Sat crowd. I've never needed to buy avocados for my hurricane preparedness kit! I am going to try to switch our next year's week to a Fri or Sun check-in.

And Marty, YES, we had a fantastic time!

Did they have the uitimate margarita at the bar this year?

I don't know what the ultimate margarita is, but I would have liked to have met it. We ordered the regular margarita, and find it to be weak. The Jamaican sunset, same. We were about to give up on the drinks there, but I ordered two DOUBLE margaritas. $25.00 for the two. They were good (better be for $25.00!). That night we went to San Miguels and margaritas were $6.95. And they were STRONG. And very good. The saltwater must go to people's heads to drink at pool bar jim's for more than just that one novelty drink, or just beer. We had the smallest incidentals bill ever this trip, mostly just by staying away from PBJ's!

The uitmate margarita is made with Premium Teguila Reserva 1800 Silver, Triple Sec, Absolut Citron Vodka, Grand Marnier ,margarita cocktail mix, ice in a shaker with your glass rimmed with salt and garnish with a lime slice.
(I am smiling). :=O

You know what we purchased this drink at Ocean Watch, Myrtle Beach,SC in April of this year and it was "Excellent". :-D

Laura,

You probably know that there's a Bi-Lo Supermarket
that's closer to Grande Ocean than the Publix I think you refer to ( Publix:11 Palmetto Bay Road).

Bi-Lo
70 Pope Avenue
Hilton Head Island, SC
Store # 275

Phone: (843)842-8691

Mon-Fri: 6:00AM-11:00PM
Sat: 6:00AM-11:00PM
Sun: 6:00AM-11:00PM

Also another choice, depending on what you're shopping for on the other side of Pope Ave in Coligny Plaza is Piggly Wiggly.

Also for special meals and or gourmet meals: consider:

The Fresh Market
890 William Hilton Pkwy
Hilton Head Island, SC 29915

www.freshmarket.com

and an upscale grocery store

Harris Teeter Supermarket

or

Thanks Richard. The thing is, I am funny about where I purchase my food. I don't shop at grocery stores that I find to be unclean. The stores where I live (Kroger, WholeFoods, even WalMart) are all very clean inside. If the floors and shelves are dirty and disheveled I tend to shy away from them. I find the stores on HHI to be somewhat unclean. We have been to Bi-Lo and Piggly Wiggly. I prefer Publix, as it is the least unclean of all the three. The one by us in North Tampa was immaculate, always. The one near Grande Ocean in HHI is ok. Also, we tend to eat mainly organic, and also have allergy free requirements. Publix hits all those better than Piggly or Bi-Lo. Fresh Market? I ended up walking out of there Saturday night and instead went to Publix. They have lots of trendy stuff, but are sorely lacking in the gluten free, allergy free department, which I found very surprising.

The best choices for cleanliness and the best product is either Harris Teeter or Fresh Market.

Publix is too expensive for what you are getting, IMO.

The rest are not worth visiting.

Haven't been to Harris Teeter. Where is it? As far as Fresh Market, I agree they do have some great product, but I was standing there in Fresh Market with almost 200$ in groceries and still was going to have to go to Publix for things like Heinz organic ketchup, and corn pasta, paper towels and laundry detergent, stuff like that. Publix is nowhere near as expensive as Fresh Market, and has an extensive organic/gluten free/allergen free section. Fresh Market does a poor job in catering to the allergic.

Laura,

In case you don't know - the Plumb Natural Vitamin Shop in Bluffton has Gluten-free products. If interested, you'd probably stop there on you way into Hilton Head. http://www.plumnatural.net/

Also in Bluffton is the Lost Penquin Deli - Lost Penguin Deli: You can special order muffins, scones, cakes, and other baked goods and pasta salads. They also stock gluten-free rolls for sandwiches and have gluten-free deli meats and also specialize in lactose free, sugar free, and vegan baked goods. Just call ahead and ask. They are on Bluffton Parkway between 46 and Simmonsville Rd. 843-706-0666

In addition to Publix, Kroger supermarket
125 Towne Drive
Bluffton, SC 29910
843-815-6070
carries a large variety of gluten-free products, including frozen foods.

Carrabba's Italian Grill
14 Folly Field Road
Hilton Head Island, SC 29928
843-785-5007

They have a Gluten-free menu

Bon appetit!

Laura,

I really think you need to consider bringing as many of those specialty items from home as possible.... so that you don't spend your first day (or more)shopping for them at various places.
Now that I look at your post again... even paper towels, paper plates, laudry sheets & detergent, ziploc bags, etc are best packed up weeks in advance at home, IMO. Sure beats the hours and $$$ spent fighting people at those stores.

That's one thing I learned over the years.... To avoid the shopping at the grocery stores on vacation as much as possible.... but I really like the meat and deli depts at Fresh Market.

Tom,

Agreed, definitely. I do love to cook, but keeping with an organic allergy free lifestyle while on vacation is not an easy thing to do, that's for sure!
We did bring alot of food items, but somehow we need to figure out how to pare down other things in order to find room for more food. We only ate out 3 meals, the rest I cooked. For breakfast we typically eat things like homemade pancakes, fruit, yogurt and milk, so to bring all the ingredients to make and eat pancakes, plus all the whole fruit I need to make our favorite fruit bowls, plus enough yogurt for a week for 4 people, and milk and chocolate milk, that alone is a cooler full, though the cooler was partially occupied already with the frozen grass fed hamburgers and steaks I needed to keep on ice, and the frozen gluten free macaroni and cheese, and the frozen soy free hot dogs. Then lunch, with bread for one kid and wheat free tortillas for another, this one eats lunch meat, this one only eats cheese wraps, plus hot dogs, buns, condiments, hamburgers, buns, wheat free pastas, pasta sauce, I mean, just think of every ingredient you need to bring to make everything you want to eat for a week, potatoes, salad, wine, there just isn't room. We also have a picnic basket packed with breakfast and lunch foods for the trip down, and a drink cooler for waters, juice boxes and chocolate milk cartons. The pancake mix I have to partially make before we leave because all the ingredients have to be gluten free, I make two zip loc bags full and that will last us for part of the week, plus a couple boxes of corn based cereal. But yes, there has to be a way to bring more food items from home than I already do. Grocery shopping while on vacation does get to be a drag, and it's silly to buy things I already have at home. I have a whole year to work on this, don't I?:)

I agree with you about the cleanliness of the stores in HH. We live in Western New York, and Wegmans puts them ALL to shame!!:cheer:

Would you be referring to the Wegman's on Alberta Drive??

I agree, there is none better than Wegman's. My husband grew up in Tonawanda, and we spent 3 1/2 years in that area, from 1998-2001. Wegman's is the one store where I have no problems reaching for the house brand (can't say the same about Kroger, unfortunately). I'd put W cola up against Coca Cola any day. Perhaps one day one of them will "retire" to HHI and open up a store there!

It does sound like a lot of work and preparation... But it sounds like you have it under control....

Actually I go to the Wegmans on Sheridan as it is closer to my house in East Amherst. They are opening in the south ---I think they are as far as Virginia or North Carolina.:cheer:
