Sad news out of Alberta this evening, the forest fire that began in Jasper national Park, outside the very popular tourist town of Jasper, has reached the southern end of town. There was a mass evacuation order yesterday and the fire doubled in size overnight. There are no timeshares in Jasper...
Just watched the video on the other thread. Devastating I hadn't realized the town was that impacted. I hoped it was only the fringes since I had heard Maligne Lake and Jasper Park Lodge which are both outside of the main town.
We have friends going to Jasper in early September after staying with us in Calgary and at our Worldmark in Canmore. My suggestions if they need to change, will be Waterton (perhaps staying at Pincher Creek to save $ and driving in) or we loved the Going to the Sun road in Montana. Or they can just come back to Calgary and stay with us and we will day trip to one of the 2 sections of Dinosaur Provincial park (they have awesome educational tours in the section by Brooks) or of course the world class museum by Drumheller with the lovely valley to tour, including Wayne and some hoodoos. We also have e scooters and bikes for the miles of bike trails in Calgary. It will depend on what they want to do.
Whitefish Montana might take the place of Jasper for us. Jasper is definitely off. It's too bad that the better river rafting weather is during wildfire season.

If you haven't already looked into it, there could be good river-rafting options in Golden, B.C., on the Kicking Horse River. Might also be some in Kananaskis, but not sure what the 'quality' is like for either area...just might be worth a look.
But terrible news for Jasper residents and businesses, as well as the affected tourists. And the giant fire is still going in the surrounding areas beyond the townsite - yikes.
