Staying on Maui. We would like to take the ferry to Lanai for the day to explore.

We want to visit the cat sanctuary
Other must see sites?
Recommended lunch restaurants?
Should we rent a car? Ubers?

How much time to allocate?

We love the the day-long all inclusive sail boat trip with Trilogy - it is the best activity we've done in Hawaii in 20 years. It includes snorkeling, meals & snacks, drinks, beach equipment & activities, and an island tour. It's pricey - but a great value for the money. And you don't have to plan anything or rent a car, because everything is included.

I loved this tour as well. Took it years ago before there were any of the big resort hotels on Lanai.

Only problem is, you probably wouldn't get to visit the cat sanctuary, so if that is a priority you would most likely need to do the trip on your own. I somehow doubt that there are Ubers on Lanai so you would need to rent a vehicle.

I can't tell you about the Cat Sanctuary, but Trilogy does have a tour van on island and they take anyone who wants to go for an island tour. If the Cat Sanctuary is a must see for you, you could contact Trilogy and ask if their tour goes there, or if they could. To be quite honest with you, the other activities are so much fun that only a handful of people took the tour.

Thanks @DeniseM for the reco. How much time is spent on the snorkel boat? We've taken many snorkel tours so are most interested in spending time exploring the island.

You take the boat over and back (don't remember how much time it takes). The snorkeling is done off shore at Menele Bay. When I took the trip we did the snorkeling in the morning, had the fabulous bar-be-que lunch, then opted for the island tour instead of more snorkeling. It was pretty much an all day trip.

That sounds like a good tour. Last time we took a snorkel boat to Lanai a Kona storm was brewing so it was too windy to snorkel. The boat ended up returning to Maui for quieter waters to snorkel off one of the beaches. Bummer. I wanted to explore Lanai but still it was a great trip.

Clarification: You don't snorkel from the sail boat - you snorkel from the beach. You pretty much sail directly to Lanai and then you have your choice of activities, including a great fresh-cooked lunch, snacks, drinks, beach activities, snorkeling from the beach, etc. And they provide all snorkeling & beach equipment, and chairs. They also have crew in the water during snorkeling, in case anyone needs assistance. Plus a light breakfast on the way out (homemade cinnamon rolls +) and champange and hors d'oeuvres as you sail back into the harbor at the end of the day.

The Trilogy tour used to be a completely family run operation. They built their own boats, and Mama made the cinnamon rolls they served. I don't know how much the family is still involved. I went back in the early 1980's as I said no big hotels there then. I had gotten the recommendation from a friend of my mothers who had gone some years before that. So I know they've been around for a good long time. It looks like now you can take one of their trips out of Kaanapali or Maalea.

Aloha, yes, we took the ferry over from Maui and had a car rented and waiting for us. We liked driving around ourselves and had a nice lunch in town.

There are a lot of dirt roads on Lanai and you have to be careful. The cars usually have GPS and yiu can be fined if you go someplace you're not supposed to drive to. All the way to Shipwreck Beach as an example. We parked where the road ended and walked. It's a very long walk but you can get pictures from afar on a drive out there.

With the driving the day goes very fast. We stayed at The Cat Sanctuary for quite a while. It's very nice and worth the stop. If you like cats, it will be the highlight of the trip.

We had planned to do this trip for years but just never got around to it. Originally, we were going to ferry over and stay a night or two but after the smaller hotels were bought out there were no cheap options anymore. I would have l have loved to stay overnight.

Below is the thread for our Maui trip and there are some posts about the Lanai trip. I will have to ask my wife where we booked the car through. It was a little pricey but not outrageous at the time. The car was excellent and easy to find when we arrived. I'll also look for the name of the place we ate at and post it. It was very good and had a good variety.

Hope this helps.

My wife just got back from the pool and gave me the information on who we booked the car from. The link is below. You have to call, text or email for pricing.

I found some more pictures from our trip. The Blue Ginger Cafe is where we ate and they do have some indoor seating.

Hope it helps and look forward to see how your trip works for you.🤙🏻

Thanks @slip Love the photos! I will look into all the places you and others mentioned.

ROFL my DH is laughing at me for wanting to go to the cat sanctuary because we have 2 cats at home (previously 3 but one recently passed) - all rescues. He said, "We live in a cat sanctuary...why do you want to see more?!?" :) Cannot wait.

Lanai has been on our bucket list so I am glad that we will be able to explore it this year.

We really wanted to visit the cat sanctuary during our February 2023 trip. We had booked the ferry to and from Lanai, plus we hired a driver on Lanai to drive us to the cat sanctuary and then to lunch afterwards, and back to the ferry. But the weather didn't cooperate, and the ocean was too rough that week for the ferry to take us to Lanai. We haven't rescheduled because after the Lahaina fire, the ferry wasn't running at all, and now it leaves out of Maalaea Harbor with a more limited schedule than it used to have. Looking forward to hearing how your visit goes!
