I have been having problems with pop ups and all kinds of stuff happening on my laptop and believe it is caused by a program called Quickshare. I have tried to uninstall it, but I can't. I looked on the web and find it's a bad program to have. I don't like downloading strange programs to delete this and then find out I have a bigger problem. I'm looking for a free program to remove it. Any recommendations???

Use Step 3, that's a long-lived brand name

In the future, just pay attention when something wants to install. Often you will find these "add on crap callers" as a tiny pre-selected check box quite towards the bottom on an install window. A lot of downloaded stuff will have these ad cloggers, this is likely not the last time you'll have to clean up.

I tried the link that Geekette provided. There are 4 different programs and I ran all 4. Each found a few things, but not one of them could eliminate the Quickshare program. So I'm still looking for a way to delete it. Help

Assuming you are properly backed up- you are, aren't you? You can format your HD and re-install from your back-up.

Here are a couple other pointers. My son used to download viruses when he was playing free games on line so I actually have some decent experience (and feel your pain).

Uniinstall whatever malware or adware removal tools you just downloaded and used.

Reboot and start in the safe mode with networking.

Download malwarebytes free version, update the libraries, and run a full scan. That should do the trick.

If not, you should be able to revert your computer to a backup point from before the download. This works a little differently depending on what version of operating system you have.

I would never format the hard drive unless you have everything backed up to temporary storage or the cloud. Even then, if your computer is older there may not be a fool proof way to get it back to the way it was given all of the system upgrades, etc.

I agree with the other poster who said to watch out for check boxes and agreements. Often you are being asked to download things that you don't want some of which can be malicious.

Good luck.

Wahoo

I believe I have finally beat Quickshare. After a lot of reading on line, I found that Quickshare has another name "Smartbar" and it resides in the registry. I went back to ADWCleaner and opened it. I then clicked Registry and then Scan and 2 files for Smartbar popped up. I put an "X" next to them and then deleted them. I have seen no more full window pop ups, so hopefully it's dead.
I am still unable to delete (uninstall) Quickshare, but if it doesn't work that's OK. My thanks to those that responded. Especially Geekette who put me on to ADWCleaner.
I will be far more observant when I download stuff in the future. :)

I'm so glad I could help! I recently had to ditch some kind of ad redirector so the crap was way too fresh in my mind... and now I have boyfriend's mothers eaten-up laptop to, heh heh, "Fix". She is a rabid game-downloader, so all kinds of goop she's agreed to. Far to go before I even let it on my network ...

I hate this crap, I've felt your pain! Glad you are rolling again!

Have you tried Combofix? It's my go to tool for the stubborn ones from the freegamedownloaders.

I get them all the time too, from grandmas game machine to juniors college laptop.

No, I hadn't heard of it since I don't download games - thank you so much!!!!

My plan is to replace her freebie trial crap with games that don't expire. I think I can convert her to enjoying Tycoon games (Zoo Tycoon, Railroad Tycoon...) but if she really just wants Tetris-type stuff, fine, here's the cd of 10,000 lightweight games...
