You purchase membership one year at a time. It doesn't automatically renew. You can also renew for three years after your initial 1-year membership. You will get an email when your membership is getting ready to expire.

Submitting reviews of the resorts you stay at you can get a free membership extension if there hasn't been a recent review done. Sometimes there are specials on for a free membership as well.

Yeah, that's a great feature. My membership had been free for years (~10 iirc) just on reviews before I decided I really should support the site with some actual $ again this year. Tug membership is easily the best bargain in the TS world - OP I strongly recommend it.
