Is it worth it? Has one year warranty from manufacturer. Then it would be $20 for two more years (therefore, three years total). The unit costs about $200. We never buy extended warranties but wonder if this one would be worth it.

If you buy it with an American Express credit card, they'll automatically extend the warranty for another year for free. Two years should be fine.

I had an Apple laptop go bad on me after 16 months. Amex paid for 100 percent of the repair.

I have heard that warranties on the IPOD Touch and IPhone are a good investment (especially the Accident Damage). We buy our warranties thru Square Trade and have had excellent results with them. I recently thought my son's IPOD had water damage and reported it to them-then I went to an Apple Store and they said-bad cable so I forgot about filing a claim. They called me about three days later to ASK about the claim!

I don't usually by extended warranties either, but if it covers everything you want it to, $20 seems worth it.

Cheers!

Ditto. Even though your credit card may cover it, it may be easier to go with the Mfr's warranty.

We've gotten very good results with Apple warranty service and $20 is a good price.

Too fragile to use

My daughter got the warranty when she got hers (nearly $300 purchase then so it was a big deal to her then) as I had heard they were fragile as most Apple products tend to be. Sure enough the screen died and, guess what, THAT isn't covered! Too many break! So what good is the "warranty'? All too typical of these things. So we had to buy the screen - which came with a lifetime warranty - and then the old warranty took over again. And she did end up needing it as they are VERY fragile indeed.

The warranty does cover the screen. It doesn't cover a cracked screen as that is generally believed to be caused by accidental damage.

I find the build quality of the itouch to be excellent. My son got his last year when he was 4 and it's been his favorite "toy" over the last year. I'd say he's dropped it at least 100 times without any issues. It also gets quite grimmy, but a good wipe down with a slightly damp cloth does the trick.

Where are you finding the 2 year extended waranty for $20.00? This sounded like a good deal for the iTouch we gave dd for Christmas. When I went to the online Apple store they were wanting $59 for a 2 year waranty.

We bought this one at Walmart and that's what the guy asked at checkout. He said we had 15 days to make the decision.

Did you buy the iTouch at WalMart, and that was also who the waranty was sold by? I bought the one for dd through amazon.com and I wasn't automatically offered an extended waranty. Now I'm wondering if I want to add one if we're stuck with the $59 one. And at that price, would it still be a good idea?

That would be a Walmart extended warranty not the Apple one. Be careful what they cover & what they exclude.

The Apple extended waranty is available for the iTouch at amazon.com for $47.99, instead of $59. Still trying to figure out if this is a good idea. Dd is away at college, if that makes any difference.

Yes, I will check what it includes. I haven't even read the little manual that came with the ipod to see what the normal warranty covers.

update

I checked out the Walmart warranty. It is through a third party and covers more than the manufacturer. Starting the second year covers power surges (likely not an issue), damages from normal wear and tear, mechanical and electrical failure, heat, dust and humidity and defects in materials and workmanship.
So it looks like a good deal.

Hopefully you'll never need to use it, but $20 for that kind of coverage (as long as they don't play games should you make a claim) is a great deal. :)

Cheers!

IF the warranty does indeed cover a cracked screen, I would go for it. Virtually every teen I know with an iPod Touch (my dd included) has had the screen shatter. My dd put hers on a bed in a hotel room and it slid onto a carpeted floor, which was enough to do the trick and yes, it was in a protective case. I tried to talk her out of buying it in the first place--I think the Classics or the Nanos give more bang for the buck since they have more memory and seem to be much sturdier for less money.

I went back to Walmart yesterday planning to buy the $20 warrantee. In reading the literature about normal wear and tear, I was suspicious that a broken screen would not be covered. I asked the cleark. She said it was not covered for that-only normal wear and tear so I did not buy it. It also says it does not cover batteries.

interesting thread. I bought 2 ipod touches at Christmas for my girls thru Best buy.com. I need to consider adding the warranty also. They do seem like things that can break.

The free American Express coverage that doubles your warranty covers anything that goes wrong - battery, screen, accidental dropping in a puddle, etc.

I actually called the company to ask. The gal said no but also said if from normal use maybe. The sales rep thought it could be if your ipod showed no other damage, like someone was always rough with it. The company is very good, he said. We had a cell phone screen go black. At the Sprint store the guy said the screen was cracked. It happened when my son slid the cover back and forth several times. He did not sit on it. I included that in my note when I sent it to the mfg. since it was under warranty. They did repair it free of charge. So I think under certain circumstances it could be covered. It would be worth a shot.

For the ipod Walmart requires you to purchase the extra coverage in 15 days. The company itself allows 45 days, so I am still debating, but strongly considering getting it.

I don't have American Express so that rules that out.

DO NOT BUY WARRANTY FROM WALMART!!!! I used to buy everything from Walmart, groceries, electronics, clothes. 2 years ago I purchased a $230 Zune with extended warranty. The Zune started acting up and errors so I sent it in for repairs. They said it was corroded and not covered under warranty. Supposedly humidity is covered, which I advised the tech support person and they said they called the repair company and were told that it was from submersion and not humidity. We have never poured any water on the Zune. They do not stand behind their warranty. The Zune has always had a cover on it and looks brand new. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and if I don't get satisfaction, I will be filing a small claims action against them. When we got the Zune back, now it doesn't work at all. It used to work for a few days, error and then when I charged it, it would work again for a few day. Now NOTHING! I will never buy another thing from Walmart. BUY FROM SQUARE TRADE, they stand behind their warranties. Prior to the Zune, I had an off-name MP3 player that broke and they sent me a refund for the entire amount within 3 weeks.
