With the “summer of covid“ we have done a couple of getaways and exchanges. We always get credit for the nights for exchanges, but recently BonVoy pushed back on giving us credit for a getaway at at Marriott timeshare. I had asked them to give my husband’s account the credit, so the bill had my name but his BonVoy number. They responded as follows...

“Kindly be advised that stays are considered eligible when they are booked through our official channels and guest's name is on the bill.

Bookings made through Interval are not considered eligible in the Terms and Conditions of Marriott Bonvoy, since those are made under Vacation Ownership agreements.”

I’m not sure how much to argue this...should we have gotten “nights” credit for an Interval getaway at a Marriott timeshare? Or is the issue the name on the bill? It’s really unusual in our experience... I have left my name on the bill many times, And given the nights to him by just changing the BonVoy number…

Thanks for any insight...

Getaways May be considered a 3rd party booking and may not qualify. AC’s are considered an exchange and qualify. Others who know for certain can add to that.

Thanks. I checked on/verified this reservation and it was an AC, not a getaway. But we have a getaway next month so it’s good to know what to expect.

Hoping to hear from others...

I received night credits for all 9 of my AC’s this summer.

What I have started doing where I wanted my wife to get credit for II and exchange bookings is to add a guest certificate to an exchange/getaway in her name. All II reservations automatically go into my name. I figured this way we were more assured she would get the elite night credit instead of having a reservation in my name but with her number attached. We are II platinum, so guest certificates don't cost anything.

This is what the T&C say:

i. Members will earn Elite Night Credit for a Qualifying Stay at Marriott Vacation Club and Marriott Grand Residence Club properties, and for stays at Participating Properties as part of the MVC Exchange Program (e.g. City Explorer).

Here is how they define qualifying stay'

2.1.d. Qualifying Stay. A “Stay" or “Qualifying Stay” means all consecutive nights a Member registers for, and personally pays and stays at any Participating Property, for which (i) the room is billed to the Member, or (ii) the guest room is direct billed to the company who has arranged payment for the Member’s stay that is not associated with a convention or group meeting.

Elite night credit on exchanges and getaways had long been a gray area. Do they qualify or do they not? There is no official verbiage one way or the other.

specifically which resorts did not give you the credit?

It can be a fight to get Bonvoy credit for some stays, but it will be more difficult since the name doesn’t match the number. I did get credit for a II getaway booked at the Westin Kierland in January. My number was added before checking in and it showed up as a reservation in the Bonvoy App. I’ve never tried booking with a spousal name.

Marriott maybe less generous now that they likely have fewer agents to look into these issues, combined with additional financial pressure. Currently this year I have 71 Elite nights, but only $544 dollars spent according to my account summary (probably half of that spend is room charges, amounts paid for TS MF or II getaways of course don’t count.). I suspect I’m not the only member like this - and I probably look very unprofitable for them.

This was at Sabal. The response is from a BonVoy clerk. Will call them today and did see what the issue is. If need be, I will change it back to my number.

I like the idea of using the guest cert since I’m platinum....

The guest cert has worked for the last three exchanges we have had. I always provide my wife's Bonvoy number at checkin.

BonVoy would not answer any questions and told me to call II. And what could they do? Nothing. And the agent hung up on me. What is going on with BonVoy? This is the second time in three months that they told me to call II for an issue that only BonVoy can work out.

So I called Sabal, and they told me that even though they can’t change the number on the folio because it’s a past event, they can send a note to BonVoy with my number and ask them to give me credit. They also told me that getaways are eligible for credit. The issue seems to be changing the name. It’s never happened to us before, but it’s some thing to know.

Perhaps they are trying ensure folks use the guest certs since they are a revenue generating item. Will definitely look at using the guest certs since II platinum makes it a no-brainer.

Credit for both exchanges and getaways. I add my bonvoy number myself in advance on Marriott.com

I had a problem with an ii Marriott exchange not getting credit. I called Bonvoy and they told me that it wasn't eligible for credit. I ended up escalating it up the chain and finally got a person who said that some of their staff don't know the rules very well. That person credited my account.

I also always get credit for both II exchanges and getaways.
Normally I can add my Bonvoy number to these reservations on Marriott.com in advance of check in.
In recent times, this has become a little more difficult / inconsistent for no obvious reason and very occasionally I have had to get it added at check in.

Just wondering how you add your bonvoy number on Marriott.com for an II getaway.
I used to do that using the missing stay request, but that hasn't worked for me since sometime in 2019.
It still finds the reservation, but won't add the bonvoy number. The reservation sheet looks different than it did in the past, and says 'MVC Bulk deposit'
I wonder if that's the problem.

I haven't been able to add a getway via the website. I call the resort directly. If it shows up in your upcoming trips in your Bonvoy account without you should be set.

Interval Getaway Confirmation Certificates still show the Marriott Reservation (Confirmation) Number.
Entering this Reservation Number and Check in date under My Trips on Marriott.com will bring up the reservation.
You can then use the option to update the reservation to add your Bonvoy number.

Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. Seems to be hit and miss for me. I gave up bothering and just provide it at checkin now. Same result in the end.

This has been my experience as well. I can put in the reservation number, it will show up online, but I can't add my Bonvoy number to it. The agents at Marriott central reservations also couldn't help me. It had to be done at the resort level.

When you click on guest information in the Marriott site, you can add the Bonvoy number.

I had tried that. In the past I’ve added my number to regular hotel stays this way when it wasn’t added at the time of booking with no problem. With the Getaway I received a cryptic error message stating that the number couldn’t be added.

I have been successful every time-after allowing time for the reservation to convert to my name. Sometimes we just do it a couple of days in advance. Maybe I am due for failure!

I forgot to add my bonvoy number at Timber Lodge (II exch). It took two tries but I was able to get the nights credit after the fact. The first rep said "no" and I mentioned that I had always earned credit before and asked if the policy had changed. Rep number two added our number. All was done via short emails. They just don't seem to consistently understand their policy.

When I check in, I try to remember to have them confirm that they have my Bonvoy number.
