We were surprised to find out that there is a substantial wait to get an appointment to submit an application, at least here in Northern, CA. About 30 days.

[CLARIFICATION:
- If you are renewing a passport that expired less then 5 years ago - you can do it all on line.
- If you are applying for a new passport, you can complete the application online, but you still have to submit your paper application and required documents to the appropriate local location that accepts and approves passports.
-If your passport expired more than 5 years ago - you have to go through the same application process as a new passport.]

Why can't you do it online? Isn't that an option?

At least in CA, I have to submit it to a real person who approves it and submits it.

You might look at appointments at locations near where you might be timesharing. There’s no need for it to be local. Passports are national; the process is the same wherever you go. The rules have changed in the past year and now many can renew online.

Around here, there is a dedicated passport office at our local HBCU. Same-day appointments available with friendly and helpful staff; they can even take the picture onsite (the PO won’t do that.) I encourage everyone to have a valid passport.

These are all good options, but they don’t apply to my situation.

Clarification: If your passport is more than 5 years expired, you have to go through the full application process to apply again, so you can't submit it on line.
