If I want to change from Yahoo mail to something else, what are my options?

Once again I'm having issues with my Yahoo mail (and from the looks of it, others are as well). I set up a gmail account last time this happened and somehow was able to import all of my old yahoo mail into gmail, but they are just in there as a bunch of emails, not sorted into folders. Is there any way to update that so that I have the newer yahoo emails as well as the old ones so that I could make a clean break with yahoo? I am willing to sort through them and put them into folders, but if there was a way to import them including folders that would be even better. Is this possible? Any other ideas?

I don't know about how the import from Yahoo works, but once you have your e-mails in gmail, you can set up filters to automatically put many of them into folders. (Folders are really tags in gmail - one e-mail can have more than one tag, so it will show up in more than one folder.)

E.g. You can create a filter that moves everything from george@company.com into a folder called "Work", anything that mentions "RCI" into a folder for "Timeshares", etc. It would take some time to get it all set up, but at least you don't need to move them all one by one.

If you have an e-mail program such as Outlook or Outlook Express (Outlook Express is now called Windows Live Mail and is included with most Windows systems), you can configure that so that it transfers mail from your Yahoo and Gmail accounts and puts those messages in a message store on your local machine. You can also use those to manage an e-mail account that you can set up with your local internet service provider.

Just curious...

I certainly don't want to hijack the thread away from the core of your question, but could you elaborate just a bit on just what "issues" you've encountered with your Yahoo email?

Yahoo has recently adopted the practice of sending a "daily news" email I neither need nor want to receive (...but can't seem to opt out of), but I'd like to know what other issues have been encountered by others...

Mine is a syncing issue. My other email accounts sync up on my phone every time but not yahoo. Happened on my iPhone and now with my windows phone. Also happens on my iPad so I guess it has to be yahoo. Grrr.

Thanks for the other suggestions. I'll spend some quality time on this after work today.

My experience is like yours - stupid daily thing that started showing up. Nothing else troubling in the newest release.

KLPCA,

I was experiencing synching issues too between my PC, Motorola Razr Max HD Smartphone, and Samsung Tablet. The solution was to download and activate the Yahoo Mail App on my Smartphone and Tablet. No further synching issues.

I did that and I still have synching issues. It just freezes up.

I think it really depends on what you plan to use the e-mail for. My cousin has a hotmail account and we sent her a bunch of PDF files and she did not receive them. They were actually business related. I finally told to get her cheap a$$ out of the gutter and purchase monthly e-mail account. The last thing she needs is not to receive important e-mail messages. Hotmail sometimes blocks certain e-mails but other times doesn't.

I have ATT.net account (free and no other ATT account of any kind required) that uses Yahoo. It syncs perfectly with all my iThingies and Android phone along with gmail. Been so long ago I don't recall how I set it up but Apple has directions.

BTW, I don't get the daily BS mentioned even though the ATT uses Yahoo. :D

You might try changing to an ATT.net account since your info on Yahoo might transfer and not change at all.

Cheers

Do you have hundreds or thousands of emails saved in Yahoo? I suspect the freezing issue is because it chokes on the size of your mail file. No disrespect but you sound like an email pack rat.

My mail accounts are clean, if something is important I print to PDF and save it that way locally. When I check email it's with the delete key.

How do you get I'm a pack rat? Actually, I use to use my Yahoo account for timeshare rentals only. Now, I've switched over to Gmail as it doesn't freeze up at all. It is definitely Yahoo's problem. I probably have about 50 e-mails in the entire account. I don't like renters having my personal e-mail as then, they can easily change things on the account. Most reps on the phone just ask for address and e-mail for verification. so, I try to avoid disclosing my e-mail address.

Hope that helps!

One more thing - opinions as to whether or not I caused my own problems.

I use Thunderbird on my laptop and have that synced up with Yahoo. It works fine. I discovered that I could set up sub folders on Thunderbird. I am able to see and use the subfolders on all of my devices (it works like a charm actually) but perhaps I caused the issue by setting up those subfolders? Today it occurred to me that maybe that's what's causing my syncing issues, seeing as how yahoo doesn't allow users to setup subfolders.

Thanks to everyone for the ideas on how to fix this problem. I feel that I need to make some kind of change - in addition to the syncing issue, there was a security breach a month or two ago. My account didn't get hacked, but my husband's did.

Isn't the entire point of an email address so that you can receive email? And that, I believe, requires distributing your email address...

And how do you think renters are going to "easily change things on [my] account"? Do you use "1234" or "password" as your password? :D

Nope, folders are fine with any email system.

I apologize, I mixed you up with the first message that talked about moving a lot of email messages around.

This is where I thought Pack Rat.

Attachments are a special issue for email providers that handle them differently. My mother's ISP stores attachments somewhere other than on the email, she has to go get them but for a long time assumed that they just never showed up.

One should never assume that email is reliable as there are many many servers between you and your recipient, regardless of how near or far they are from you physically. Things Happen.

I refuse to pay for email and would never goad someone into paying for it, either. If one is sending business material through email, then they do need something reliable, but why wouldn't that be the business email account?? I would never dream of using my Yahoo account for important work stuff because that is what the solid and supported company domain is for.

Well, it is my cousin's account. She was using hotmail and I was sending from my work e-mail some non-profit paperwork. She accused me of never sending it when in actuality hotmail did not let the e-mail go through. So, I pointed out she might need to pay for an e-mail server to allow important documents to go through. Of course, e-mail is not 100% reliable but better than waiting for snail mail. I guess, I should send it all via mail for her but I'm doing the work for free. P.S. It is a new non-profit so, she is just starting out and probably really doesn't have the funds to pay for a reliable e-mail.

Timely topic. I've been using Yahoo as a temporary business email address (self-employed, just me) and have found that certain files come across garbled, creating error messages when downloaded. It definitely is a Yahoo issue because my new email (local DSL company) handles it fine. The software's tech support helped me figure out the issue.

Yahoo has also been freezing up and unable to send files of any real size because of limits. Some downloads get saved as split files and then I'm unable to open them up.

It seems to me that Yahoo needs to worry less about buying new companies and work on a better basic email system. I had decided yesterday that I needed to leave Yahoo.

I am so glad to see this message. I have been having trouble with yahoo mail since early April. they advised it was internet Explorer causing problems, so I switched to Firefox and it worked for awhile. i went on other computers twice and it would not work onthose computers, which use Internet Explorer. but now i am having same problems.
some of the problems include
after replying to one email, it freezes, cannot close or open any other email.
will not auto fill in any contacts.
sent to group and one or two people inthe group do not receive emails, even though their name is on address line.
constantly freezing up, and not allowing attachments either.

i transferred all names to outlook but I have had yahoo mail since 1988. i have an enormous number of contacts, and also group. i had to send several messages to a group of thirty and had to hand put in all thirty names. i cannot figure how to do groups in either google mail or outlook.
also, since i imported all contacts to gmail, there have been many changes. I find i cannot negotiate gmail as well as I did yahoo mail.
Yahoo help says it has to do with browser settings. and the strange thing is that when I open yahoo mail, it looks different every time.

I don't get the news email either. Why don't you set up a spam filter to get rid of it?
