Memorial Day is intended to honor those service members that have fallen in service. I don't know any service members that want us all to spend the weekend sobbing and singing hymns for 3 days. The holiday weekend is celebrated in this country as an expression of the freedoms that the fallen have died for, which includes having fun. Everyone should know the purpose of Memorial Day, and should take time to acknowledge and remember that. They should not avoid having fun and pay penance.

Agreed, have some fun, but do it in remembrance of the millions of soldiers who paid the "ultimate sacrifice" so you could.

In honour of all those of my American cousins who have served, thank you! And especially to those who fell and paid the ultimate sacrifice, your sacrifice has not gone unnoticed on this Memorial Day. May you continue to RIP. Lest we forget.

The Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium. Performed every night at exactly 8 pm for almost a century. My grandfather (16th Battalion, Canadian Scottish Regiment, Canadian Expeditionary Force) was wounded just north of here at the end of the 2nd Battle of Ypres in April 1915. He survived his wound and lived a long, productive life. Many of his comrades did not.
