There should be public universities on the list. Many of which cost far less and provide similar quality. e.g. UC Berkeley, U of Mich, UCLA, U of Washington, U of Florida.

I'm not sure what the purpose of the article was. Obviously, there are superb schools that are not in the Northeastern US, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania Ivy athletic league. No surprise there.

Even in the Boston area, Harvard is indeed great. But so aren't MIT (as the article indicates), Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern, Tufts to name a few. All of which require the highest, 99th percentile SAT scores, pretty much perfect high school grades, and often extraordinary school and non-school leadership roles to get in.

Either that, or millionaire or billionaire parents who contribute millions to the school's endowment fund and/or build multiple school buildings. :)

Of course, what may be of greater interest to TUG members might be colleges and universities that offer free college courses to "seniors".

For example, I mentioned Boston University above. It costs about $85,000 per year for its undergraduates. But people 58 or over can attend classes for free under that school's Evergreen program.

And many state schools (i.e., public universities) offer free classes to seniors. To name one, the entire University of Texas system.

Might a foreign language class be of interest? History of art or architecture? Classes on a specific geographic area of the world? How 'bout something about the environmental challenges that Florida faces? You often have a choice of taking all tests and doing all homework and getting college credit or just observing as an auditor.

This is a ridiculous list. These schools are just as hard to get into as an Ivy, and in some cases MORE difficult.

Of course, it's clickbait but we fell for it and clicked

But no one dreams of sending their kid to the Ringling Barnum and Bailey College of Art and Design

I sadly think many people should question if college in general is a good ROI anymore. Especially if you're not fully on a scholarship or independently wealthy - Ivy league are good schools, but I think precious few can continue into Academia or say become an MD so making back that $400,000 or more for 4 years is very dicey. It's also pretty obvious that trades are widely needed and at least to me seem more automation resistant than many jobs.

This is really a stupid article. Stanford? Duke? U Chicago? Very very difficult schools to get into.

Sorry, I just have to be contrary and say, what if the kid dreams of going there? ;)

PS I didn’t read the article. As usual, I enjoy reading everyone’s responses!

Two of my three kids went to Harvard and Dartmouth. We are Middle Class. They had Scholarships. Even with the Scholarships they incurred Debt for living expenses. But they do not regret their decision. The third started at CalTech. But after two years he decided to take time off and ended up in the Air Force. He finished at Oklahoma because of where he was stationed in the Air Force. The one that went to Harvard had to decide between Harvard with a Scholarship that covered tuition and books and Rice that covered everything. He chose Harvard.

Wow, that is impressive.

Our son went to School of Mines in Golden, CO, and he just had a small scholarship, so the rest he borrowed and paid back.
