I have a question regarding Brittney Griner

She didn’t get the vape thingy in Russia. So why wasn’t she arrested on arrival?
Any sympathy here for Otto Warmbler or Trevor Reed?
Tons of sympathy for Warmbier. He took down a poster as a souvenir. Not an obvious crime, and he came home with severe brain damage. So yeah, lots of sympathy for him. Not familiar with Trevor Reed, but upon reading the story, it looks like he was arrested for being drunk, and was held due to his U.S. military service. So not a lot of close parallels in my mind. In answer to your question, who knows why she was not arrested on arrival. Perhaps the drugs were not detected. Or maybe she didn't bring them to Russia, but received possession of them from someone else. But the real issue isn't why she wasn't arrested at a different time, but why would she carry drugs through a Russian airport. Her situation falls into "don't do the crime if you can't do the crime" category for me. It was a vape pen. She should have simply left it behind as opposed to traveling with it.

My opinion about her culpability and (sorry to say it) stupidity probably won't change after sentencing but my sympathy for her situation might, if she gets an unreasonably burdensome sentence. But that having been said, the risk of putting yourself at the mercy of justice systems that lack U.S. procedural protections and guidelines is probably the chief reason why you don't do inane things like carry drugs through airports in foreign countries, especially ones like Russia that are not known for judicial protections for the accused.

I'm still failing to see the crime. CBD doesn't (or at least SHOULDN'T) contain any THC. Chemically, it's like getting busted for traveling with a vial of diesel fuel.

All I want is for Eric Snowden to be sent back to the US and stand trial. Sorry for changing the subject.

I sympathize with her situation, but completely lay the blame at her feet. One only needs to watch Midnight Express and understand that you don‘t carry drugs that are illegal in any foreign country you are traveling in/through.

That movie is on my top 10---despite being depressing throughout.

Pretty ironic that I have responded to the movie Midnight Express on two DIFFERENT topic threads today.

That movie scared the hell out of me when I watched it.

The report is not that she was carrying CBD but hashish.

Every report I've seen has said "0.7 grams of cannabis oil."

The only problem here is that she was arrested in a police state. If this was a member of the sorority of decent nations, she'd get a slap on the wrist and a "don't do that again."

What I find disheartening is how many Americans are not just willing but eager to throw her under the bus. And why? For what? Even if that oil was high in THC, 0.7 grams wouldn't put a smile on Willie Nelson's face for more than a few minutes.

There's a difference between throwing her under the bus vs. not being in favor of invoking the power of the Presidency to get her out of the problem she created for herself. You are right, the main problem is that she was arrested in a country not known for catering to human rights. If I recall correctly, recent political dissidents have been poisoned and imprisoned. Exactly the kind of place I would be careful not to carry drugs in their airport. Truth be told, I wouldn't do that even in the USA.

The overlay here is that this person in particular is known for protesting against the USA and refusing to come out of the locker room for the National Anthem, which to me demonstrates an ignorance of how great and precious our rights and privileges are, here in this country. Sometimes one doesn't realize how wonderful it is where you are, until you find yourself somewhere else where it isn't so wonderful.

As far as whether the substance was hashish or a MJ derivative, the reports vary. https://sports.yahoo.com/hashish-oil-did-land-brittney-170922064.html

But regardless, the issue isn't whether we here in the USA feel it is deserving of a slap on the wrist. The issue is how do they feel about it in Russia. You can beat your spouse in a lot of countries, but you'd better not do it in the USA. Regardless of where you come from, we will impose the fulll weight of our justice system on you if you commit that crime. Even give you permanent residency. Conversely, you can have MJ here but not there. So don't get caught with MJ, hashish, or whatever illegal contraband you may choose in a nation that classifies the offense far more seriously than we do. I don't think that's throwing anyone under the bus. It's simply realizing that sometimes people who crawl under the bus get run over.

CBD especially here in the US is tricky- it’s never 100 percent thc free- and many of the better manufacturers say that while it won’t get anyone high the possibility exists that it cause a positive drug screen test. That’s the decent manufactures - have come across many CBD shops that just slaps labels on edible THC higher content items so that they appear legal for sale without a prescription.

you are 100 percent right in that this only happened because she was arrested in a police state- and she made a choice to go to that police state.

Russia is it’s own sovereign nation and that should be respected. Should the US government have gotten involved- not sure how I feel about that because I do feel very strongly that American citizens on any foreign soil need to at a minimum be respectful and not behave as the stereotypical spoiled Americans.
