Felicia has been downgraded to a Category 2, and may be only a tropical depression by the time it reaches Hawaii on Monday or Tuesday. But flooding and damage are still possible.
We were on Kauai 2 summers ago when Flossy was about. My husband and son had their deep sea fishing trip canceled, but other then that it didn't effect our trip.
The winds and surf both have been pretty rough on Kauai all week. We went deep sea fishing earlier this week and it was torture. We are scheduled with Birds In Paradise tomorrow and hope the winds will let up enough for us to go.
Having experienced Hurricane Iniki in 1992 and lived through many hurricanes in Florida, Hawaii is really not a dangerous place for those weather menaces. The water surrounding Hawaii isn't warm enough to sustain or power huge hurricanes. It's like a cold shower for hurricanes.
The way Hawaii gets hit with a hurricane is when the weather is heading west near the equator and then takes an abrupt and fast paced northern route straight toward the islands.
I'm sitting in the living room in Po'ipu typing this. Whatever is left of Felicia is passing by right now.
At the moment, the skies are partly cloudy, with heavier clouds inland. Seaward there are puffy cumulus clouds. All told, not much different from a typical trade winds weather situation.
Last night in the late afternoon, there was a continuous cloud layer hanging off shore to the south. That cloud layer is gone this morning. There was also a period during the night when it was quite windy.
Surf is about one to two feet higher than what we typically see this time of year.

edit: just saw the morning storm update. Felicia is slowing down and hasn't yet reached Maui. Expected to reach Maui today, with predictions of some rain and wind on Kauai for tomorrow morning.
So, did the big island get the brunt of the storm? It's good to know that things aren't as bad as they sometimes seem. May it not get worse. I wish you some clear skies and sunshine...and beautiful rainbows.

Felicia veered north of us and only the tip from Hawi down to Honokaa received the rain but no winds. The beaches on west side of the island are occupied with swimmers and Hilo and Volcano are completely dry. We consider ourselves very fortunate. We have about 3" of rain in our rain-gage at the moment and it is lightly raining off and on.

I paid extra money to come to Maui a day earlier on Sunday to miss the weather forecasted for Monday. I figured there would no really bad storm but I thought there would be some heavy rain on Monday. I am here on business so I did not want to get caught in Honolulu during storm delays. I needed to make sure that I was ready to go on Tuesday AM. Well, silly me for spending money to make the changes.
So far, Lahaina has received little rain, although it is very breezy right now. The West Maui mtns look like they are getting rain. It sounds like the storm was weakened and then the winds sheared it apart. They still have some forecasts for flash floods, but I am guessing it might not even rain in Lahaina.
The best news is that my wifey and daughter are joining me later this week to keep me company while I work here for the next 2 weeks. I usually mooch my way into a timeshare condo on business and this week, I have a very nice 2 bedroom with AC.
It is raining this morning in Lahaina. It seemed to rain throughout the night, but nothing heavy. I would think that the sun will burn off the clouds and stop raining. There is some big areas of rain NW of the islands, but they seem to be stationary. West side of Oahu seemed to get the most rain. The wind is virtually still. So, no big storm.

Hawaii did not escape Felicia. Oahu had pretty much rain, but Kauai had flooding and damage from it. It rained at least 7 inches. Now there is another Hurricane coming this way, Guiermo, but it is forecast to go north and be a tropical depression.
Although there is concern that Guillermo may follow the same track as Felicia. Which, at the very least, could mean more heavy rains and flooding like parts of Maui, Oahu, and Kauai received this week.

By and large, we had some wind and locally heavy rainfall. Flooding was generally localized. Felicia brought a couple of days of high humidity, which is clearing out as the trade wind weather patterns resume.
Went up Waimea Canyon today, but there was still a lot of haze in the air. Didn't take a single photo because of the haze. All of the rivers are also still quite brown from silt. Waterfalls have a lot of water.
