I'd like to buy a humidifier for a large master bedroom (nighttime use). Does anyone have advice on brands, what to watch out for, etc? I had heard that warm mist should be avoided because of bacteria growth...any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Sharon

We like one made by Reli On, which is sold at Wal-Mart for about $30. It's a cool steam process. You can also buy a conditioner that will help it stay clean & algae free. We clean ours with a little bleach abt. once a month. Charcoal filter needs to be replaced abt. every 2 or 3 months.

What Steven Wright Did.

Steven Wright said he put his humidifier & his dehumidifier in the same room, turned'm both on, closed the door, & let'm fight it out.

We have one in the MBR with a fabric wick. We don't like it because the wick hardens from minerals in the water.

We have another in the main area of the house, a Hunter Carefree Humidifier Plus. We love it.

Sunbeam Ultrasonic

We have used the Sunbeam Utlrasonic humidifier for several years in MBR.

Just pour 1/2 galon of distilled water in and turn on for the night. It holds more than 1/2 galon but that amount seems to get the room through most of the night in a comfortable mode.

Clean it every 2 to 3 weeks. Just wipe it out and let it dry good.

Keeps the room very comfortable.

I feel the main point is to get an ultrasonic model. Other decision factor is to make sure you have a large enough water tank to make it through the night on one fillup.

I have had a number in the last 15 years, they seem about the same and all die in a few years from calcium buildup. We have municipally softened hard water so mineral deposits are always an issue.

Can't help w/ humidifiers but can respond as to cold vs warm -

DS had allergies as a kid and we often used a vaporizer/mister type thing recommended by the docs. They all said use only cold water because of the bacteria issue.

Thanks everyone.

Matt, thanks for the link to the Hunter site. How on earth do you figure out which one to get? It sounds like the one you are suggesting is made for a whole house? (You said it was good for a 1600 sq. foot home...I'm just looking to do one room.)

It would be nice to have one for the whole upstairs, but my kids all sleep with their doors closed so I guess each of them would need their own humidifier....

Hi:

I wasn't going to respond because I'm not an expert- however I use a whole house type from Sears. It is not ultrasonic- rather it uses filters that wick up the water and evaporates the water using a fan.

I haven't heard why you want a humidifier, and why specifically you want it in your bedroom? We use one because we have baseboard water heat which is drying, and the air in general in the Northeast is dry during the winter months. We use ours in the family room on the main floor, and the bedrooms don't seem too dry. Bedrooms usually benefit from humidity as a by product of our morning showers. So if your bedrooms are dry, then the balance of your home might be even less humid.

Do you have a humidistat that quantifies the humidity? Maybe you should get one and see how dry the air is in your home.

Okay, another maybe dumb question...

All of the humidifiers on that website look like they are for entire houses, rather than a bedroom with a closed door. If I buy one of those, is it going to "overhumidify" a 260 square foot room?

Thanks!!

Sharon,
We have a 1400 sq.ft. home but have two room closed (guest rooms). The unit we have allows you to set the humidity you want and runs till it reaches that setting thans shuts off. It then cycles off and on as needed. We fill it about every three days.
If I were you, I would look at their smallest unit for one room. Make sure it has a Mechanical Humidistat or Digital Humidistat. Look at the following Models:
The Care-Free Humidifier Model: 33255
The Care-Free Humidifier Model: 33257
You can also read the manual for this models at their web site.
Hope this helps.

I had an ultrasonic at one time and noticed a fine white dust covered the furniture.

Do you have this problem?

We use distilled water in an ultrasonic humidifier. This distilled water is about 70 cents a gallon at the local big box. We have never seen any calcification on the humidifier unit that has been used for 5 plus years.

We live in a somewhat dusty climate and have not noticed any additional dust in the Master BR vs any other room in the home. We find this small ultrasonic room humidifier a real comfort to a sleeping area.

Are you using distilled water ?

No. I stopped using the ultrasonic because of the dust. Of course, this was about 20 years ago, so maybe they are better made now.

Matt, did you guy your Hunter from that website? Because I had some problems with it and can't reach anyone live...didn't realize that it is not the Hunter company website....
