I just released a studio Aruba Surf Club for a 2 bdrm St. Kitts for June occupancy. I was trying for Harborside & Frenchman's cove but I know a lot of you said that I'll never get it so I booked this instead. Could you tell me a little about it cause I know nothing about the ins/outs of this resort and island? Should I get a car? I always do in Aruba and St. Martin. BTW - I'm not doing it with points since I always use lock-offs at my resorts. Thanks.

St Kitts

Hi,
Can't help with the information you are looking for, but have you looked into airfare yet to st kitts ?
We will not be renting any cars, have been told that the taxi's are the way to go for getting around and for tours.
I am headed there this July and have not seen any deals. We have (5) units for the July 30 check in date.
Best I have been able to see so far is $610.00 on American out of O'hare.

Thanks, Jim Breslin (grew up in the Niles/Park Ridge area) near Greenwood and Oakton

Hey Jim, I'm at Dempster & Harlem. I just booked with AA pretty expensive but the best I got was $1210 for 2 with pretty good flight times in/out of Miami. I was going to use Miles but they didn't have any openings for those Fridays. Prices are going up all over the place for travel. They'll have to start bringing on more planes with the economy recovery - eventually. So, I guess you haven't been to St. Kitts either? I'm looking forward to it. the pics of the Marriott look pretty nice.

That's a fair price for airfare.

Enjoy St. Kitts. It is a very different experience than Aruba and the popular northern Caribbean locations. It will seem very "homey". Nice people and a laid back attitude. Just be careful in getting into the more rural and native areas. The folks there aren't as tourist friendly.

St. Kitt is not for everyone

I was just at St. Kitts Marriott over Thanksgiving, and it is not for everyone. I had a pending Ebay escrow that had been on going for one year so I managed a reservation. The island raining season is Oct/ November and in two months 60 inches of rain, but not last year. The Marriott is the largest resort on the island and the Hotel has a Casino, and I had good luck. I say the island is not for everyone because my wife did not like the bug bites. I did not like the cost of airfare. We travel a lot in the Caribbean to timeshares and this is not my favorite. I had an ok time. The highlight was the one day trip to St. Nevis. You have to try it. Golf was ok, but pricey, and the back 9 holes were the best. Food was expensive at the hotel. The all inclusive available to hotel guests was not available last year to timeshare owners(bad decision). I recommend the Rocking Lobster down the road. I do not recommend renting a car, especially because you are driving on the Left Side, it is a small island, and cabs are less than $10. The Marriott is on the Atlantic side of the island, like a 10 minute walk from the Caribbean side and the difference is night to day in terms of the swimming experience.
Best way to describe my experience is I cancelled by purchase escrow because I do not look forward to returning.

If you have ever been to Aruba, I would tell you it is a better experience. On the other hand, the Pros are: St. Kitts has a reputation that keeps having Brits and Canadians returning, and some people just rave about it; the local rum is quite good and I walked away with $12,000 from the Casino. The Con, I don't want to return.

How do you say......It's a nice place to visit, but i wouldn't want to own there.

I like Aruba that's why I purchased there and we go every year. BUt I also like to lockoff and try somewhere else. We were at St. Martin in Dec and we had a great time. So, I imagine we'll have a great time here as well. I just need to know a little about the island like cell phone SIM cards, rental agencies etc.

all inclusive

Food was expensive at the hotel. The all inclusive available to hotel guests was not available last year to timeshare owners(bad decision).

That is an interesting comment -- we felt the same way about the all inclusive at the Frenchman's Reef not being available for Frenchman's Cove guests since the all inclusive was one of the things we really enjoyed at the hotel rather than renting a car to get around.

I'm sure the Hotel made a lot on us for a weeks food and drink, but I'm sure it is a lot cheaper for us to shop at the market and only eat out once a day, buying our own rums and mixing our own voodoo juice punch. As empty as the Hotel restaurants were last fall, they sure needed something to bring in business.

Hi -

We traded our Aruba timeshare for the Marriott St. Kitts last year. While I agree that it is very different than some islands like Aruba, I think it was a nice change of pace. I think if you go in with that expectation you will enjoy it. The focus on tourism is newer to this island than Aruba so there is still some room for improvement. But the locals we met couldn't be nicer.

We opted to use cabs for our travel instead of renting a car. Things are not quite as accessible in Aruba, but it is personal preference whether you want to use cabs or rent a car. Unfortunately I can't answer your question about sim cards.

If you are looking for suggestions for activities or restaurants, let me know. The one thing you MUST do is take a day tour with Thenford Grey. He is by far the best tour operator we have ever worked with. If you're a history buff, you'll enjoy the Brimstone Hill Fortress and the plantations. We also took a day tour of Nevis and enjoyed that.

The beaches and views are gorgeous. We were amazed that first morning when we took our usual walk down the beach and saw nothing but sand and ocean....no restaurants, no other hotels....very different than Aruba :) These are our pics if you're interested: http://www.flickr.com/photos/7817147@N02/sets/72157624181694933/.

Enjoy your trip and let me know if you need any other info.

Thank you for sharing your pictures! They really give a good feel for the island and the resort.

Wow! Great pics. Thanks. Yea we can't wait to go - always willing to try something different. I'm probably going to rent a car since I like driving -- On the other side of the road might be a challenge - I'll have to remember my youth!:) So, restaurants and activities would be a good thing to find out. BUt are there some super market stores around like Ling & Sons in Aruba? OH and I read that I may have to get a British temporary drivers license - is that true?

Thanks! My husband takes most of our photos and really has a knack for capturing the places we visit.

You do need to get a temporary license. It looks like you can pick on up at the place you rent the car.

The main grocery store on the island is Rams. Check out the response in this thread from sun&fun. It's a good description.

Surprisingly some of the prices at the Marriott store were not as marked up as we have seen at other resorts.

As for restaurants and activities, check out these two threads.

(Sorry to toss you all over this board for info. :p)

Let me know if you need any other info about the island or the Mariott. You will really enjoy the island!

We are headed to St. Kitts next month for our third visit. I prefer it over Aruba hands down. THe atmosphere there is so much more laid back than Aruba. The three story villa type units spread around one of the two smaller pools on the property provide a much more relaxed experience then Aruba where I felt it was just people stacked on top of people. The main pool which you share with the hotel guests is much larger than the two smaller pools and provides all the usual hotel type pool amenities including having someone come around to take drink orders etc. It is a wonderful split between a time share property with all the space that a full size villa gives you and a Marriott full service hotel.
We have never rented a car preferring to take the cabs provided with their friendly drivers. St. Kitts is probably the least "touristy" Caribbean island I have ever been on and I have been on lots of them having done at least 4 Caribbean cruises.
The people of St. Kitts are warm and friendly and very happy to have you there. Not at all like St. Thomas where the people who work in the tourist industry are rude and have their hand out constantly.
