Is there a way to unsubscribe to the "in case you missed it" emails from TUG? I can understand the admins doing this if it's something actually important, but these clearly aren't & it seems like literally all TUG newsletters are now sent out twice.

They are reposts of the weekly Saturday TUG newsletter. They arrive on Tuesdays and the header says, "In case you missed the Saturday Newsletter".
I agree that a duplicate reposting is at best redundant. I wouldn't want to stop a newsletter, just the repost.

the 2nd send of the newsletter is part of the newsletter software that sends another copy to everyone who has not opened the email from the initial send on saturday.

it doesnt track anything other than opening the email in your inbox. so while you dont have to actually read the newsletter to not be sent the 2nd send on tuesday, you do have to at least open the email so its marked as read in your inbox. this will result in you not being sent the 2nd copy 72 hours later.

Roughly 20% of subscribers get "resent" the newsletter each week.

(side note, if you click unsubscribe, it will unsubscribe you from the entire newsletter, not just the 2nd send)

Do you know if reading the newsletter in the preview pane is considered opening the email? I have at times seen the second send, but I think it is because I don't remember even seeing it the first time...

it should yes. as it was explained to me there is a single pixel embedded in the email that it tracks if the newsletter has been opened/read or not.

so the amount of time the email is opened should not matter in terms of the tracking pixel registering.
