I think this is a cool story about making lemonade out of lemons: When you come into the outskirts of Carson City on Hwy. 50 near the intersection of Route 395, you see a large lumber mill on your right: Tahoe Forest Products Saw Mill. As you probably know, the huge Caldor fire burned about 222,000 acres in the Sierras in 2021, west of Tahoe. Most of the area is still covered with dead and damaged trees, however, the nearest lumber mill was too far away from the burn area, for it to be economically feasible to haul the trees to for processing.

So, the Washoe Tribe partnered with an investor and built this lumber mill on tribal land in close proximity to the burned area, to process the damaged and dead trees and make wood products. They were able to move quickly, because the 37 acre property falls under Washoe Tribal law. So the burned area is being cleared so it can recover, dangerous trees are being taken down, and it added about 75 jobs to the community - including Washoe Tribe members, and the Washoe Tribe shares the revenue from the lumber that is sold.
