I know. I had one supposedly from Mastercard asking me to click on the link to "verify" my account for "securitiy reasons." Fully of spelling mistakes, the grammar was terrible. Why not hire someone to write something that actually sounds legitimate? Write it off as a business expense - LOL!!

I guess it only takes a couple of people to actually respond to these for them to keep trying.

Hurk Horgan?? Are they trying to wrestle your TS from you? Most people would be willing to give them away!! :D

I got a call at home from someone asking for my wife. When I told them she had left for work a bit earlier, she informed me my wife had been discussing with them about selling our Gardens of West Maui t/s.

My wife and I had just been talking about using it just a day or two before so I'm certain she hadn't been discussing with a third party about selling it. I told the caller they must be mistaken and please remove us from their list. The caller then got insistent and then hostile.

"I'm reviewing our notes and some months prior your wife e-mailed us that you own five weeks and were looking at possibly selling off some of them."

Now it is true that we have a bunch of weeks and at one time we were discussing maybe off-loading one or two, and I suppose it's possible she told it to these folks. However my wife rarely e-mails anyone and it all sounded a bit too slick.

"I know we have plans for that week and we aren't interested in selling." The caller says "Why are you wasting our time then? You e-mailed us!!!"

I say, "No we didn't, please remove us from your list."

"Don't e-mail us if you aren't serious" she says.

"We didn't, thank you!" I say and finally hang up.

As if I'm even going to consider doing business with someone I don't know who is getting hostile with me on a cold call.

Amazing.

Ever since i got on the do not call gov list, i never get called.

I've never had to deal with one of these cretins on the phone.
But then, I have caller-ID, and don't answer calls from "Unknown," "Toll Free Call," nor even "Out of Area."

I got the Hulk Hogan email offer today too!!

Jack (Handy) Success is making the rounds. Dope.

Must be nice. We're on the list yet we get called several times per week.

As for the question, how stupid do scammers think we are? Apparently there are enough that are that stupid to keep the scammers scamming. I recall recently reading a post somewhere (here or OY) about a family member falling for the old "AOL lost your account information" scam. I personally knew a co-worker who fell for the old AOL scam and gave up her bank account number to them.

If it never worked, they would stop sending them. Unfortunately, there's just enough people who fall for the scams to keep them running.

I can see some of them working, especially the ones that look like legitimate emails from financial sites, but Hurk Horgan.P.hD.? Good Grief.

 ok, where do I wire my money? :hysterical: :hysterical:

I received a phone call tonight from 514-316-9415. I did not recognize the number but answered it anyway since I never know if a family member might be calling from a work number, etc. It was a recording telling me that my Wells Fargo debit card had been frozen and to reactivate it I should push 1. I assumed this was a scam to get personal information. I do not bank with Wells Fargo. I googled the number and found it is, no surprise, a phishing scam. The comments on the web site said the recording said their BoA ATM card was compromised, etc. Same scam just using different banks, different cards. It is a Quebec number.

The last time I answered a # I didn't know, it turned out to be a computer gauging what time we were home. After that we were swamped with telemarketer calls. Since we stopped answering them, they've started to slow down. It was everything from lowering our interest rate on CC's to companies wanting to sell our timeshares to companies telling us we had won a free vacation.

Family knows to leave a message if we don't answer or send a text to my wife's cell phone. We just won't answer the phone anymore unless it's a number or name we know.

It was just too good to let pass.
You know, Mosca, because you are a trusted Tug source, for a split second I considered inputing my info in that--then I realized you were using it as an example of a scam. :D

1 (9 )

Just got another phone call but did not answer. Number displayed was 1 (9 ) and that is why I didn't answer it. What is 1 (9 ) ????

There is technology / equipment around these days that can easily "spoof" phone numbers, essentially allowing the caller to "display" any number they wish, whether real or contrived.

This development seems to have further emboldened many scammers and telemarketers, since they know full well that in order to file a "do not call" violation complaint with the FTC, the complaint must specifically identify the "incoming" phone number of the violator. If the displayed "incoming" number itself is completely bogus, then any filed complaint is obviously rendered worthless and ineffective. :wall:

Many business phone systems are such that one can generate any Caller ID they wish, by simply typing it in.

I have had some good laughs here!
I received a call from one of those timeshare resellers, and he actually did a huge yawn in the middle of his opening sentence.
anyhow they probably think we are dumb because we bought from a developer. How many times have you heard a timeshare owner saying they had to switch to points or clubs because the saleman said RCi wasn't going to honor weeks anymore or that their week was worthless.

Hmmm...my wife and I have two phone numbers each. We've signed-up long ago for all the "do not call" lists. Recently, however, we are getting marketing calls on every line (two are cells). The calls are not from past business. For example, one was a pre-season heating & cooling checkup offer.

I'm not sure why these calls have started again...I thought perhaps there was a legislation change of some sort.

I think the do not call list is only good for three years.

I think the do not call list is only good for three years.

I recently got a call from a contractor who "was in the neighborhood" and wanted to talk about my home improvement needs. I told him kindly but firmly that I was on the Do-Not-Call list. He proceeded to argue with me that I had to renew it every year and therefore he had a right to call if I had not renewed it. The fact is, since February 2008 your number is permanently on the Do-Not-Call list with no need to renew. If you haven't registered your number since that time, it might be good to re-register.
