 I ask myself this question, now that I think my TS purchase bug has been itched. I have had a total of 8 TS that I purchased 2 from the developer and the rest resale. I have since sold 4 and am down to 4 (1 is a fairly new purchase). So far I think I have what I need to have the flexibility and various vacations I want, but looking at some of the other resale deals is tempting. How many TS do you have, how many is ideal for a family with small children and a couple with grown ones. What have you purchased and why?

Too many would be when you can't afford &/or use the weeks you own.

(Use = staying at, exchanging, letting family or friends stay or use a week, or renting out).

I'm probably at my limit but there are some here who have lots more weeks and have successfully figured out how to rent out their surplus to pay the MF's on their portfolio's. I'm not that smart yet.

My HGVC gives me the higher end accomodations within a fairly flexible system I can exchange both within and outside with their agreements with RCI. My Maui and SCI properties I picked up at bargain basement prices and I use both of them regularly as the San Clemente is central to great surfing, scuba diving & other attractions. Maui, because...well it's Maui! It's an EOY which is really all I can afford, both in airfare costs and vacation cycles. In future years I may pair a HGVC week on one of the islands with our Maui week.

Can There Be Any Such Thing As Too May Timeshares ?

How many TS do you have
4 timeshares -- not that there's anything wrong with that.

Or, depending on how you count'm, maybe just 3+1/2 timeshares because 1 of ours is EEY -- not that there's anything wrong with that, either.
What have you purchased and why?
Floating Diamond 3BR lock-off in Orlando FL because it's great & we like it & it was a good deal on eBay in 2003.

Also, 2BR standard-grade fixed-week red-season timeshare in South Africa strictly for advantageous trades into nice USA timeshares.

Plus, dinky entry-level points timeshare in the USA heartland, just so we'd have a toe-hold into the points system.

Then, Floating Diamond 3BR lock-off EEY timeshare in Orlando FL right across the street from our every-year Orlando 3BR lock-off, bought only because it was priced so low that we simply could not pass it up when it virtually dropped into our lap.

That's the bare bones of it. For all the details (more than you may care to know), click here.

i own 9 weeks, not buying any more. planning in the future to use them for retirement but now we are using some and renting out the others,so far have been very lucky with rentals. after i rent 1 more all my MF's for all of them will be paid for, so if i rent out the 2 others i have i will make a profit, so things are going well. if i can't rent them then i will convert them to starpoints so i will have them in the future.

I own four weeks, two of which are at the same resort in different years. That's my limit, at least until I can retire and find more time to use things. Current plans are to sell at least one, possibly two, and keep the other, "better" two of what's left.

The problem I have with timesharing is that I like the resorts I own, and the exchanges I can get, but I also like camping in my travel trailer out in the boondocks where there ARE no timeshares. With limited vacation time each year, I have to balance what I want vs. what I can handle.

Reality and practicality suck sometimes. :hysterical:

We own 8.

1 Vegas Strip - 1bdrm
2 Palm Springs - 1 bdrm, 2bdrm
3 Mayan Palace - 2 bdrms + 3 extra weeks if wanted
1 Grand Mayan - 1 bdrm + 1 extra week if wanted
1 Royal Haciendas - 2 bdrm

And yes, it is too many. But we love the resorts and are hoping to use them more in our retirement 10 yrs from now.

In the meantime, we have been giving extras to family and employees. We belong to both RCI and Interval International, but we don't know where we would rather go and we don't really want to spin our wheels trying to rent out etc., as I've read it is difficult.

I may however have a timeshare addiction as I still peruse the ads daily.

I have 8, normaly rents 6 and use 2, I have four at one resort and 3 at another and 1 summer week in the caribbean,
they are all hight demand Resorts and hight demand time,

so renting is not a problem so far, I have been on this site now for over 6 yrs. and even thought most expert here says dont buy from Developer, I still do, as I found there are some hight demand Resort and time of year that I never see on ebay or other for sale sites,
example The Crane in Barbados summer weeks, Manhattan Club Penthouse suites New years, Week ect.
Had more that 8 but sell some
So I buy Ebay, Developer, Friends, Tug, Redweek,ect.::doh:

Timeshare Addicts

We own ten weeks presently, and plan to cut back to about 6 or 7 weeks.

We have had good luck in renting our weeks on Redweek or My Resort Network, and TUG.

Since 1991 we have bought and sold a few, all resales, and now feel we have the resorts and weeks that we enjoy.

We use 5 or 6 weeks, just in Florida in the winter. The remaining in Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach.

We are retired and share our timeshare weeks with our children and grand children.

I still look on Ebay every day, as there are exceptional buys now.

Also renting is becoming an option for many people rather than buying timeshares.

Apparently, timeshare get in your blood.

We have five weeks and seem to be using all five with family and friends. My idea is to have enough weeks in the warmer parts of the world when it gets coldest here.

I think I own 21 weeks, or is it 23? I have lost count and I have lost my mind. I keep seeing steals on e-bay I can't pass up. Trying to rent them, bank them, give them to family as gifts, and to employees as bonuses is a full time job. If I juggle my weeks well the rental income will pay for 4 weeks of vacation for me, 1 week for each of my 2 children, 1 week for my parents, and 1 week for my secretary. If a hurricane comes or the economy tanks, woe is me. I need to sell 10 weeks, but I only bought weeks at places I actually like to stay, so which weeks to sell is the hard part. I need to permanently block access to e-bay on my computer. Hi, my name is Tom and I am a timeshare addict.

I am always 'tweaking' my portfolio!

I am hoping that a few rentals each year will cover the MFs

Own 4 and Happy with 4

We are happy with the 4 we own. We use 2 for trading and get 5 weeks away from work each year. One of the timeshares is a weeks worth of points with Worldmark so that one we sometimes do a week and sometimes split it up. We have also been able to use bonus time and add a day here and there.
I would never get rid of Lawrence Welk Resorts as it is our favorite to go and relax and feel I'm living like the rich and famous.
On the other hand, anymore would be too much for us.
Bart

Five, two of which are 6 weeks back to back I use every winter for skiing, one I use mostly for the amenities (parking, pool, ski storage, etc) in the same town and trading and two more we use every year for vacaitons (London and Mexico).

Probably drop RCI when my membership runs out since we have enough options now.

Cheers

This topic has been discussed before. The "king" of TS (an ex-tugger) owns like 99 weeks (can't recall but in that ball park). He definitely can't use them all. Renting them out is like a full time job.

I own 5 but can extend them (lock off, points, etc) to 9 weeks, more than my annual vacation entitlement, which is 7.

I have stopped logging onto eBay. No more TS purchase please.

I have had as many as fifteen but am down to six and am looking to move a couple of these soon.

Question- For thos of you who say that you are making money on your rentals are you considering your purchase cost or just your annual M&T?

Personally, I have found so many deals on ebay and redweek etc that renting a timeshare instead of owning on is looking more and more like the way to go. The only exception is if you want multiple weeks at the same resort and don't want to change rooms each week.

We own two units, are under contract for 2 more studios and have 735 DVC points. This is more then we can use, but we rent out our excess to cover our MF's and make a little extra that goes toward airfare.

Its good to be among others...

Wow, now I don't feel so strange. I have a few friends that own a TS but I am the only one who loves them so much, and use them so often. I have more than enouph for now, and it will last me til after retirement. Right now I use it for 4 weeks of vacation and 1 weekend a month for a getaway. When I retire, I can convert it into possibly 12 weeks of travel and a weekend here and there. I don't really like to rent them, as sometimes its more hassle than profit. One that I want to sell is the Presidential Resort, but my husband loves that one. To me we can't really use it to its potential, as we don't own a camper (yet - he insist that one day we will). Its an every 5 yr use in a cabin, however you can leave a camper up there all year long and stay on property for 8 months straight out of the year, moving your camper every 2 weeks, or you can rent a camper for $28 a night (the MFs are $325 a year though). We can also use the amenities all year long and its only 1 hour from our home. We also go every other weekend in the summer for 1 night as we get seasons passes to Kings Dominion amusement park which is only a 30min ride from the resort, but I don't know how long we want to keep it. That's the only one I plan on selling in the future. I am knocking around a purchase of a Marriott in Aruba or Hawaii, but the price is just a little more than I can afford right now...but after reading that it may be cheaper to just rent it, I may do that instead. Thanks everyone...keep it coming...I am learning so much here...

The former Tugger, in this thread referred to as "king" has cut back a little, but 99 is a good estimate based on a call we had a couple of months back. And it's a little lonely here without King Crumudgeon too :ignore: (couldn't resist)

So far, my founding of the NJ Chapter of Timeshares Anonymous has brought me great mental help for my own apparent affliction. In his absence, I guess am presently Tug's largest owner (unless a bigger nut steps up, I will then happily stand aside) . My name is John and I also have a problem...

Anyone reading this, if you have 10 or more, look for the telltale signs of addiction to snagging great deals. When you reach 20, look for therapy, maybe your wife/husband is correct, you are losing it. Do you buy without telling your spouse? Ever feel like an addict hiding his crack stash, from family, when the timeshare contracts come in the mail?

From a high of about 120 units in 2004/05, I have sold off down to 45. That number would be about 25 if not for the killer deals I could not resist over the last 3 years.

But my target is still 15-20 in the next 2 years. That level of usage will be consumed by me, friends, and family each year.

So, get some help, it's working for me...sorta....I'm off to Ebay now for a bit :D

Timeshare fanatic

John, you need to hook me up with your NJ Chapter of TA. I have purchased a total of 21 weeks, but I sold 4 at Mount Amanzi in South Africa. I bought weeks at Ocean Landings as gifts for each of our 3 adult children and my sister, so we could all vacation together in Cocoa Beach with our families. That leaves 13 weeks we still enjoy (5 of which were purchased on eBay in 2007, the year I retired). The weeks we have now, we use: 4 at Ocean Landings, 3 at Summer Bay Las Vegas, 2 at Pono Kai, 2 at Maui Schooner, and 2 at Kona Coast II. We are still using deposits and bonus weeks from II and Trading Places that were accumulated prior to my retirement. Other than the first purchase from Shell in 1995 (Kona Coast II) the rest of our weeks were acquired resale. After our deposited weeks are booked, we will no longer pay trading fees. I anticipate letting RCI lapse, which was mailny used for SA trades. We may retain membership in II for getaways, even though we primarily use Trading Places. Our plan is to look forward to a minimum of three long vacations a year. Since DH and I are both retired, we can take advantage of last minute rentals, if we want to get away at the spur of the moment! We're lovin' life! :whoopie:

I own well over 100. I think that's about as many as I ever want to own. I don't know the exact number since it changes every couple of days. I don't yet have access to everything, so I have more buying to do over time, since my goal is to own one of everything. But, I may sell down to about 40-50 and buy into a Destination Club. That new forum has opened my eyes to some new opportunities. Thanks Steamboat Bill.

The only reason I have so many is that I got addicted to finding an buying good deals. If I didn't sell or rent timeshares, I think 10 would be about the right number.

I think there are a couple of owners on this message board who have well over 200 timeshares. If you think about it, that's not really that much. It's only about 4 whole condos.

Down from 7 to 3, which is all we need right now...

I used to own two Marriotts, one ski Canadian week, one platinum HH week, two RHC, an eoy three bdrm orlando week and of course DVC.
I unloaded the Marriotts, sold the ski week, sold the HH summer week.

I bought another RHC (I need my head examined) giving me a total of 3 of them, bought four more platinum Marriotts, bought a BlueGreen contract for trading on RCI and for bonus time, still have the eoy Orlando three bdrm that I always rent out, and of course 1350 dvc points. This past week my neighbors told me they want to get rid of their 360K FF points. I don't need them but I am thinking of buying/ acquiring them because I can't pass up such a good deal. Oh, I forgot to mention the two bdrm Foxrun I received for closing fees only from another Tug member. What's the grand total? I never counted until now. The total is 10 weeks (without the FF I am considering) of timeshare and a vast number of Disney vacations all those pts can bring me (I rent a lot out).

Hi Tom, welcome to my world. I hardly ever look at ebay any longer. I can't look there without wanting something. I spend too much time away from home and my pets and I miss them. However, my family and friends love me a lot for the vacations I can provide them with. I am a timeshare junkie and my name is Marylyn.
