How long is the trip from Cancun to Cozumel?

Will be staying at the Royal Islander which even offers a day trip to Cozumel but it doesn't specify how long the trip takes. Am I correct in suspecting that we will spend much of the day traveling and very little time in Cozumel?

Thanks for your help!

Best wishes,
Dave

If the schedule is arranged in advance by the resort I would think that a total of two hours each way would be maximum. I have been to Cozumel on my own several times but have usually combined it with some shopping/dining at Playa del Carmen. Don't know what the Royals charge for a day trip but if you don't mind some inconveniance and want to save money there are a couple of bus lines from downtown Cancun to Playa. You will find the Cozumel ferry terminal within walking distance from the bus station. Its all very simple.

Kola's reply is pretty accurate. It would be about an hour ride from the Cancun hotel zone to the ferry dock at Playa del Carmen. The ferry crossing itself takes a little over 30 minutes, but the initial boarding, then docking & unloading everyone adds another 15 or 20 minutes to it. It felt like about an hour. There were LOTS of tourists on the morning ferry just going over for the day. Cozumel is so small, you could pretty much see all you needed to see in 1 day, and the ferries leave every hour, on the hour.

We took the ferry over to Cozumel and stayed 3 days after our trip to the Grand Mayan. I loved the snorkeling on Cozumel. It is much more like the Caribbean than typical snorkeling in Mexico. So, if snorkeling or diving are in your plans, I think a day in Cozumel is totally worth it. If you were just going over to see the city of San Miguel -- I would say "skip it". We felt that Playa del Carmen was 10 times better than any of the restaurants or night life on Cozumel. If you were in search of the best beaches -- I would opt for a day in Tulum instead. The beaches there are absolutely gorgeous -- right out of the Corona commercials. We felt the beaches in Cozumel were not as beautiful, but that the amazing snorkeling MORE than made up for it!

My hubby and I loved our 3 days in quiet Cozumel & the amazing snorkeling. However, our 13-year old has no desire to EVER go back, because she felt there was just not enough going on. She preferred Playa del Carmen or even the pool scene at the Grand Mayan -- where there was more excitement.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Any advice on getting from the airport to a Cozumel resort?

We have heard all the nightmares about taxis being dishonest. Does anyone know how much it should cost to get from Cancun airport to Cozumel ferry terminal and the best way to go about doing that?

I'm going on a short cruise which was supposed to be to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, but the ship will be in dry dock and our group has opted for Cozumel out of Tampa. We'll only be in port for one day - any must do or must see things?

Is there a particular place or beach in Cozumel that has the great snorkeling?

We got a small boat by the dock and it took us past where the old dock got washed away and sunk by the hurricane into a pretty good spot maybe 10 to 15 minutes away.

As far as taxis in foreign countries go, the best thing to do is have an idea what the fare should be, then agree to that fare before you get in a taxi for a particular destination. I did this throughout extensive travel in Costa Rica in my younger days and it worked real well. They know that you know and you won't get ripped off. If you don't get any answers here as to the estimated cost, wait until you get to the airport and inquire with several locals. They will know or can at least tell you who would know.

We were there in March on a cruise and had a great day on Cozumel. We did a 1/2 day snorkel trip with Papa Hogs dive shop, then had lunch and spent the afternoon at Paradise Beach. Papa Hogs dropped us right off at the dock for Paradise Beach.

Since the hurricane several years ago, the best snorkeling is offshore. We snorkeled at the Palancar reef and Columbia shallows.

There is a thread in the Cozumel forum on Cruise Critic that talks all about Paradise Beach. It really is a fun place.

You could book through the internet ahead with Brant's service. We and many others have had wonderful service from them. You can check the price on his website. This will be cheaper than getting a taxi.
www.entertainment-plus.net Last January we needed transportation from the ferry in Playa del carmen to the Royal Mayan and nothing on his website fit that so I emailed him and worked it all out that way.
It really worked great. Just had to have a fellow with a bike take us to the McDonald's where they picked us up.

They can get you to the Ferry at terminal and you should be able to find some fellows on bikes with luggage racks to take you to the terminal to get your tickets...When you arrive in Cozumel the same fellows can take you to the street where you can get a taxi to your resort. The taxi in Cozumel likely will not be more than $10 depending where you will be going.
