How long does a helium-filled mylar balloon last?

My husband brought home a big balloon (about 27" X 30") for me for Valentines Day--it was actually the day after Valentines and the grocery store was either giving them away or charging a dollar. We both thought it was kind of funny. (He had already given me a Valentine and some flowers.) I tied it to a plant stand I have in the kitchen and thought I'd just leave it up until it lost it's helium.

Well, it's still floating after four months. I'm amazed.
 
We had one for our grandbaby's birthday in November. When we came back from Florida in March, it was still inflated. We figured it was time to get rid of it, so we popped it. We couldn't believe it had lasted so long!
