Only as a one time treat or if you have extra points to burn. One of the most grungy units we ever got at a Wyndham timeshare (not welll known for excellent housekeeping to begin with) was a Presidential unit. The upgraded stainless steel refrigerator was sitting about 6-8" out into the kitchen (who knows why) so we went to push it back where it belonged. Apparently it had been in that spot for awhile as the muck under it was beyond disgusting. We had to call housekeeping to come clean it up but no one could answer why it hadn't been done as part of the regular cleaning/maintenance.
That experience aside all the Presidential units are is standard units with fancier level of appliances, maybe upgraded fabrics & colors. They are no larger than the same units except in the cases where its a 3 or 4 bedroom when most units are 1 or 2 (Atlantic City comes to mind). It can be a nice change but I wouldn't pay the extra points to get it very often.
Not entirely accurate John. In some locations (BH, GC, NH, ST, SF, GD, WAIKIKI to name a few) there will be a difference in the sq ft and location of the unit on the property. A 2BDX in Grand Desert is going to be smaller than a 2BPR while a DX vs PR in Waikiki will be both about furnishings and floor location (PR's are all 9th floor and above). In SF all presidential units are in a completely different building than standard units and are larger with nicer amenities. (Presume this will be true with BC now that it has officially gone Presidential.)
Also, as you said, your experience with the problem unit is the exception, not the norm. Presidential quality is mostly about the furnishings and amenities. Linen quality is considerably better, granite counters, upgraded furnishings, etc.
Is it worth the price of the point ticket? No, not if you are paying full points. However, many VIP's will snag a PR upgrade within their discount period. In that respect, it is makes the visit a bit more upscale. Beyond that, the resort staff is going to give you exactly the same service as you would get if you were in any other unit.
In some locations, all the premier views are Presidential units. At La Cascada in San Antonio. All of the units with the large balconies facing the riverwalk/downtown are all Presidential Units.
I love the Presidentials. I will occassionally book them at full rate, when I know one is really needed. I will be opportunistic and upgraded whenever one is available.
Just got back from three days at the Glade Presidential Units. This was our 4th stay at the Glade and I can say that the Presidentials are nothing like the standard units. They are significantly larger, extravagantly decorated and outfitted and are 1st class when compared to the standard units (which are pretty nice to start out with).
We also stayed in the Presidential in Panama City. Those units are also larger and the kitchens and bathrooms are amazing. Was sad to say that the Kitchen was about twice the size of our kitchen at home.
I've scored those two units on a VIP upgrade. I'm paying full point price for a Pres Unit at La Belle Maison for a family wedding later this year.
The presidential units also have larger TV and and more items in the units. The beds are also better and the linen is defiantly better. Stayed in Waikiki and the units was just beautiful. the family wanted to stay in the room and not go and visit the island. Large balcony's and the views were out of this world. Definitely worth it if you get an upgrade. To pay full freight may be if you want a special place to visit.
We just got back from La Cascada in San Antonio. Our deluxe (i.e standard) unit had white appliances instead of black or stainless. It did have nice granite counters in the kitchen (but not the bathrooms). From photos I've seen of both types of units it looked like our furnishings/decor was not as upscale as the Presidential units but were still very nice. We did not get the larger, river view balcony but we had a great view of downtown. (THANKS Sandy for your detailed list of good/bad units!).
We were very satisfied with the deluxe unit, it was large and well done. We were exchangers (RCI weeks) but I'm not sure I would pay any extra for a Presidential to spend only one week a year when the deluxe was really very, very nice. That said, if buying a Presidential gets much better trading power or if the difference in the two types of units is more pronounced in other resorts it might be worth it to you.
Bamasteve,
The Presidential units at La Belle are on the lower floors (3rd) as they are the only units with STOVES (both burners and oven) due to fire code in NOLA in hotels. There is NO sofa beds. Floor space is the same. Nice sinks, wood floors in LR/DR/Kit and fancier furniture. There should be brick walls too (as some of the hgher floor units don't have those original walls.)
Wyndham; Disney OKW & SSR; Marriott's Willow Ridge, Shadow Ridge and Grand Chateau; Val Chatelle; Hono Koa OF (3); SBR(LOTS), SDO a few); WKORV-OFC-4 and Westin Desert Willow.
The linens are better? I thought the linens were outstanding at Waikiki Beach Walk, but then we had a supposed Presidential unit at Wyndham Shearwater, and the sheets were literally torn in a few places. I am NOT impressed with the linens and general maintenance of the Shearwater interiors, considering it is 500K points to get a 2 bed "Presidential." We are owners at Shearwater and are shocked that Wyndham has continued to allow Shearwater to look so worn.

Thanks Linda for the info. I also noticed that the difference in points between the deluxe 2 bedroom and the presidential 2 bedroom isn't as significant as compared to the differential at other resorts. Maybe this is because the floorspace is about the same and just some of the amenities are upgraded.
Not sure how much we are going to use the stove with all those great restaurants nearby.
