How do I trade WKROV to a Marriott Kuaui

I just reserved the large side of my WKROV 2Bdr LO for a year from now.

I would now like to trade the small side of the LO for a Marriott property in Kuaui for the immediate week before or after my week in Maui, I'd like to do this relatively soon so that I can use miles for the air, before those seats go away.

Would someone please tell me how to do it. Last time Starwood deposited that 2nd week into II as a Sheraton Vistana.

Also what can I expect in Kuaui can be traded for that smaller side of the LO ?

This is all quite confusing to me. I have so many issues with SVO. I'd like to side step their crazy game here.

many thanks for your willingness to help.

Why not use your 67,100 remaining StarOptions from WKORV and reserve a lock-off unit at WPORV (Princeville)? You will have to wait until eight months before you travel to make that reservation, but the resort is not sold out and there should be availability. JMHO

I found someone in the timeshare exchange section of this site and was able to exchange WKORV-N for a week at the Marriott Waiohai. The Waiohai is a very nice property. There may be others interested in such a direct exchange. Anything is possible with a direct exchange provided both parties are flexible. I'd also consider exchanging into WPORV as previously suggested, although I prefer to stay in the Poipu area of Kauai.

I believe you can do a Request First in Kauai with II, reserve a Marriott Kauai hotel with points for same timeframe 'just in case' and make your ffmile plane reservation; and in the meantime see if (as a previous poster suggested), you can arrange a private trade for those same dates.

Or just rent out your lockoff and use the proceeds to rent what you want at the Marriott.

Arlene: good idea, but she has to make ffmile reservations a year in advance for Hawaii and renters don't move too fast.

Agreed that the OP would probably not get her unit rented out that far in advance, but certainly could make arrangements to rent whatever week she wants at the Marriott. It will be extremely difficult to get a non-Marriott to Marriott exchange a year in advance, given that Marriott owners can only reserve 12 months in advance (13 months if they own multiple weeks) and that there is a 3 1/2 week Marriott preference period in II.

Chances are, you are going to have to make your FF arrangements without firm reservations in hand. Personally, I like Cathy's idea of putting in a "request first" search with II. While it may diminish your chances a bit, it still leaves you with the flexibility to rent out your week if the trade doesn't come through. Cathy's idea of making a backup hotel reservation is a good one, as sometimes those Hawaii weeks pop up during Flexchange and you could get one at the last minute and still cancel your hotel ressie. Or, you could decide after a while that you don't want to wait for your trade anymore and you could go to Redweek and rent that week from an owner.

Oh, here's an idea, have you checked out the exchange area of Redweek? Around a year in advance, you could ask them to value your week, and check back to see if they have any weeks at the Marriott that you want. I would think the two would have similar valuations.

Lots of ways to go about doing this. But as far as I can tell, the only one that will get you a reservation in hand before the FF window opens is probably renting from an owner. It all depends on your personal tolerance for uncertainty. FWIW, I am in a similar situation and I am choosing the "let the request ride and have a backup hotel reservation" route.

This article posted in the Owner's Resources folder at the top of the board explains How to Exchange with II.

However, if you call at exactly 8 mos. at 9:00 a.m. ET, you can probably make a Staroption exchange into WPORV with a lot less effort.

The Starwood abbreviations are in the Owner Resources sticky and there is a list on the Advice Page (linked in red bar) for general abbreviations.

One more thought: You could go ahead and book your FF seats to Oahu and then wait to book your interisland flights when you know for sure where you will get the other week. That would lock you into either the week before or after, but at least you would get the main flight booked while ff seats are still available.

Assuming you made your Resv. for Jan. 24th or 25th, 2009, since the MLK holiday is Jan. 19th, I think I would go for the week after your Maui Resv. for the 2nd week, since any holiday seems to increase travel/demand.

You shouldn't have any trouble getting Princeville as long as you call exactly at 9 a.m. ET, at exactly 8 mos. out. But, as a back up, you should go ahead and reserve the lock-off side at WKORV for the 2nd week. Then if you can't get the exchange, you still have the week reserved on Maui as a back-up. Of course ideally, it is better to stay in the lock-off the first week and the 1 bdm. the second week.

Can you explain that to me Denise ?
And also what is the likehood of getting an upgrade from the LO up to the one bedroom. I have no experience in all of this and in fact seem to be more confused than before.

You who offer so much good advice are truly angels

The studio/lock-off is roughly half the size of the 1 bdm. If you stay in the 1 bdm. first and then "down grade" to the studio/lock off, you are likely to feel cramped in the studio. If you stay in the studio first, then the 1 bdm. the 2nd week, you get an "upgrade" the second week and that's a lot more satisfying.

I would not count on getting an upgrade, unless you are an Elite owner.

Upgrade

That all makes sense. I am an elite -only 3*- but I have NEVER been able to upgrade. I guess it's pretty risky expecting one. Anyway it's now 2 wks after my 12 month mark. Doesn't that diminish the possibility of an upgrade- or is it the 8 month date that establishes upgrades?

thanks for your help Denise

I don't think anyone knows what gets you an upgrade anymore. I would guess that low occupancy, helps.
