Tried many ways to cancel and read that it is very difficult to do. Any suggestions? I have paid through my credit card.

You shouldn't even be paying for AOL anymore as it's free to folks that have their own internet connection. If you go to keyword: account, just choose the zero dollar option. While that won't cancel the account, it will make it so you are no longer paying for it and then you just don't have to use it anymore. You can erase your credit card info as well....

To cancel it you have to call. Unless things have changed, you can't completely cancel it online.

Used to work in a bank. The saying was that if it wasn't for AOL, we would have half the customer service reps. You can cancel but it takes an act of God to get them to stop charging your account. You may have to cancel the account and reopen or at least change your account numbers. We timed our exit many years ago with the cancellation of a credit card.

You can file a complaint with the bank to have the charges reversed but that is a pain to do every month. I just want to give you a heads up, pray for the best, expect the worst and pay close attention to the activity on that credit card. We had customers who had cancelled and AOL continued to zap their account for another 4-6 months.

Good luck! I sure hope it has changed since then!

Go to this page on AOL and follow the links to FREE AOL. If that doesn't work there is also a chat feature.

Call them

Call them, cancel and be firm. If they start asking questions tell them that you want it cancelled and you want it done now.
We cancelled about 5 years ago and after I threatened to write to the district attorney they told me no problem.

Years ago I had the hardest time cancelling AOL. Their cancellation line was always busy, even in the wee hours of the morning. After calling numerous times with no success I came up with the zany brainy idea of selecting their "new service" option on their menu of phone options...and voila, a live CSR with no hold time. I cancelled with that person who answered, and if I recall they didn't even give me a hard time. Try it!

Thanks for your help, everyone. I think I have opted out by using the link posted by Fern. Of course, time will tell!!

If you still use their dial up service, you would still pay their monthly fee as they are your ISP.

Of course, but presumably the OP was not using them as her ISP since she wanted to cancel the service.

At any rate...sounds like it all worked out for her!

another AOL question

If we cancel the $15/month charge (we have cable internet now) will we still be able to use our AOL e-mail addresses? Will we still have "our favorites" websites we've saved etc. or should I copy everything we have on AOL before canceling?

I use my cable internet for e-mail to my outlook but my husband still uses AOL for his e-mail.

If you go to the link I outlined above, you will no longer have to pay for AOL. You will still retain your AOL email address, bookmarks, start page (if you have one), etc. He'll be able to access his email through AOL's webmail. The only difference is that you won't be able to connect to the internet via AOL. Since you have cable, you don't need to do that.

Thanks Fern,

So when I'm traveling for business and occasionally I need to get on AOL to connect or when the cable is out at home and I've had to get on AOL to connect, I will not be able to do that. Correct?

I have to give that some thought as AOL has been a lifeline a few times to the internet for me. Is it worth the $15 a month insurance? I'll have to think about that.

Again, thanks!

Here's my backup -- http://www.all2easy.net/

I've been paying them $5/month forever, and occasionally use them when travelling or when my satellite service went down. I'm now using Sprint 3G service for both purposes, so I probably don't need them. But for $5/month, it's good insurance. They advertise that they have 8000 local access numbers, and indeed, I've never been anywhere that they didn't have covered.

If I were you, I'd drop AOL at $15/month, and if you need the backup/insurance, use something like all2easy (I think there are other similarly priced services).

No, you wouldn't be able to use AOL to connect. But there are much cheaper plans other places if you only need it for travel and when cable is out at home. I use MaGlobe, http://www.maglobe.com which was recommended here years ago. You buy a bucket of minutes, which are good for a year. For $14.95 you'd get 28 hours. If you want more, you can get 56 hours for about double that. Its very reliable and has service numbers all over the country, even in foreign countries.

Well I did it! And got an e-mail back that I'm canceled, so we'll see how it works. Thanks all for the advice. I love TUG and Tuggers!
