We are planning our trip for next year to Curacao and Cancun. We will be flying from Curacao to Cancun through Panama. We did this last year and had an overnight layover in Panama and did a short city tour. While we can do the same thing again, but if we select a flight without the layover in Panama it would mean we would need a hotel for a single night in Cancun. Our flight wouldn't get in to Cancun until around 9:00pm, so are there options near the airport? We could also tack the day on to the end of the stay. We were considering the Hard Rock Hotel for a single night so we could say we have stayed there, but prices are through the roof because of the all inclusive. What is a good option for a single night.

Snag a room at Courtyard by Marriott Cancun Airport. Unless your flight out the next day is late, you'll have just enough time to collapse on the bed and get in a few winks.

I looked at that option and it is cheap enough or we could always get it on points or a one night certificate.

So that then brings up logistics. We use USA Transfers for our airport transfers. If our one night was at the start of our stay, how would we get to and from the hotel. Does the Courtyard have a shuttle? If so, we could take the shuttle from the airport and then back again the next day to catch our transfer. If our stay was at the end, it seems like getting between the hotel zone and the Courtyard.

Okay, here is another option. Book a single night at the Westin hotel in the Hotel Zone at the start of the stay, use USA Transfers to go from the airport to the hotel and then from our second hotel back to the airport. We plan to stay at the Westin Lagunamar for the week following the single night. Do they offer any kind of transportation between the Westin hotel and the Lagunamar?

Many have shuttles but check when they stop running and what amenities are near by.
We stayed by the airport arrivals night and arrived to late for the shuttle so paid a flat rate $40 or whatever it is, as did our friends. Then another $40 to get to the tourist zone the next morning.

The WLR shuttle is airport only.

All in we were not far short of the cash cost of booking another WLR night.

With hindsight we should have done that.

Airport Marriott Courtyard does have a free airport shuttle. Also has a free shuttle that goes to beach twice a day. The airport courtyard was nice with a small pool. The cost two years ago from hotel airport to golden zone(beach) by taxi was 18-22 US.

Ok. All the above is likely still true.

Does the Marriott beach shuttle drop off at tourist zone hotels?

Does the Marriott hotel to airport shuttle run after 10pm at night?

The rate from airport to beach was less than airport to round the corner.

Marriott shuttle only dropped off at one hotel on beach can't recall name maybe Intercontinental probably Marriott also or sister group. In the newer area of hotels, long long beach walk to get to mid section of hotel zone short bus ride.
Don't know if shuttle runs after 10pm from airport.

It killed me to pay the 20.00 to get from Cancun back to Marriott Airport. There was a bus that ran out front of the Courtyard, but since I was alone(woman)and not familiar with that area which is commercial I did not feel comfortable joyriding around on the bus system. I have been know to ride the buses in Mexico just to see where they go pretty cheap entertainment.
If you meet a taxi driver you like just get his or her card and ask them for a deal or to pick you up at a later time in the day or a different day to take you someplace else. I have hired driver to take myself and others to the Ruins this way and return to airport from Playa Del Carmen and it is always much less then the usual rate or tour rate. You get to name your time and exactly where you go.

If only the Marriott Casa Magna was a Category 5, we would have a hotel certiifcate that we could use for one night. We did book the Westin for a $113 rate, though depending on the taxi rate between there and the Lagunamar, the extra cost may be worth it to just book a cash rate for one night at the Lagunamar.

Though we have wanted to snorkel at Punta Nizuc, so staying at the Westin for the night would make that a little easier.

Cancun

The Marriott close to the airport is a good option if you only look for a bed, period. Then again if you would rather eat out, have a drink or maybe some shopping (though the latter might not be an option arriving at 9pm) I would head towards Cancun's center which is a 15 minute ride from the airport, maybe even less with little traffic at night time.

There is a nice mall in the center called Las Americas, on top they built upscale apartments and a hotel (The Fiesta Inn), right in front of Las Americas you find the B2B and the Ibis. In and around the mall you find lots of restaurant and bar options and yes, it's a safe place to be. :)

I've used priceline

I've often stayed at a hotel on the strip in Cancun for 1-2 nights in order to get a lower airfare using priceline. I just take a local bus with my stuff to the single night hotel and then get my shuttle back to the airport for the flight the next day.
