I was scanning yahoo news feeds when I came across one of those click bait adds designed to look like a real story that made me think about the “old” days. This one said, always put a towel under your hotel room door.
My old brain instantly thought, “ But how will they slide the receipt/bill from the hotel stay” under the door that final evening?
I can’t recall when they stopped doing this, nor did I even notice the practice had ceased, but I do remember getting up on the final day of vacation or a weekend trip and reading through my room charges, nightly charges and various taxes before heading out the door. We always just left the keys in the room and never swung by the front desk. Now, I always stop by the desk on my way out, just to make sure they time stamp our departure (in case someone adds something to our bill after we’ve departed) and to check my bill to be certain no one has inadvertently placed someone else charge on our bill.
We did have a merry mix up when the front desk at a timeshare sent the maids to do a midweek full clean of our unit that someone else requested, but apparently didn’t know they’re exact room number. If I hadn’t caught the maid, it would have been a pretty large charge to our account.
I sort of miss those bills under the door or, in the case of timeshares, hung on the door. Marriott use to hang a final bill on the door years ago. I recall that’s how I knew when some guests were leaving.
