Looking for some help here. I just managed to trade a studio for a 3 bedroom at the Surfwatch this August. I've never been to Hilton Head or the Surfwatch property. What advice do the Hilton Head veterans have?
We are definitely going to do Savannah and Charleston so that's two days right there. Obviously we will try to enjoy the pool and beach as well. None of us are big golfers.
Can you rent a cabana at the Surfwatch pool? How many pools are there?
Any help would be totally appreciated.
Congratulations. That's a great up-trade. I agree with the other posters about not trying to overdo your schedule on HHI (especially in the heat of summer). We go to HHI regularly (twice so far this year with at least one more outing to go by year-end). Our #1 recommendation is biking (rent them or bring them). For local exploring, we love Sea Pines Plantation. A vehicle access pass is $6 per day at either of the entrance gates. There are many things to do and see. You can head down to South Beach (home of the Salty Dog Cafe company - an island mascot) with shopping/restaurants (just don't try to feed the Salty Dog parrots ... they bite).
You can check-out the remains of one of Hilton Head Island's cotton plantations at the Stoney-Baynard Ruins and see a great example of 'Tabby' construction where cement was made using Oyster Shells. Parts of the main house, kitchen, and slave quarters can be visited.
At Harbour Town you can visit the lighthouse, museum, shops, and restaurants. There is a large playground for little kids and a marina (often with beautiful yachts to ogle) for big kids. There was a gorgeous 130' in port when we were there last month.
There are also special events with live-music under the Liberty Tree several nights a week through the summer featuring local entertainers.
Lawton Stables is a great place to go horseback riding around Sea Pines.
You can also check out the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. It's a great area to spot gators (they are most prevalent on HHI within Sea Pines Plantation based on the amount of fresh water sources around the golf courses).
So, there's a lot you can do. Enjoy.
