Just got a letter from the Hilton Club New York regarding some changes. It mentions the conversion of hotel rooms on the 36th floor to Hilton Club accommodations, increasing the size of the owners lounge, and a much more advantageous Hhonors point conversion rate of 50:1 will be implemented.

Does not say when it will take affect.

That 50:1 usually only applies if ALL points are redeemed. I wish they would expand that benefit to Elite Plus members!!

IS 50 TO 1 A GOOD DEAL? Not Really!

I know that the 50 to 1 is twice as good as 25 to 1, however, I always looked at the 25 to 1 as getting two nights in a hotel instead of a week in a 1 BR apartment. So 50 t0 1 is 4 nights in a hotel instead of a week in a 1 BR. However, you paid NYC purchase prices and NYC maintenance for you week. The purchase prices and maintenance are higher in NYC than other locations so you paid premium for your week and are paying premium for your maintenance to get the 4 nights in a hotel room for your week in NYC, which while not my cup of tea, is a very prime location.

HHonors have been a relatively poor value for 15+ years; Point inflation has only made matters worse. I wouldn't transfer points to HHonors unless I've maxed out RCI with what can feasibly be used within 2 years. RCI Is a much better value.

I've never converted my NYC Hilton points to Honors, but it looks like there's potential value there.

I pay $280 maintenance (2015 rate including club dues) plus $40 purchase price (resale purchase amortized over 15 years) for every 1,000 NYC Hilton points I own. I can convert them to 50,000 HH points, which makes it $6.40 per thousand in Hilton Honors.

The Hilton in Rome charges 475 euro (AAA or AARP rate) or 80,000 HH points per night in high season, plus tax.
Converting euro to dollars at 1.22, that's $580 per night plus tax.

In comparison, my HH points price is $6.40*80 = $512/night plus tax.

Note: This comparison doesn't get into the fancier conversion strategies discussed here: http://www.tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58716
