Lets say you have 10,000 HGVC points from 2017 that you can't use this year and they will expire Dec 31, what is the best plan - convert them to HHonors, bank them to 2018 or something else?

A 3rd option would be to deposit your 2017 points into RCI for $99. Then you get to extend those points for 2 years. Plus, you can put on a search for a desired resort, or for another HGVC resort. Just another thought.

I would say deposit into next year first, then if you still can't use them by end of year, you can still deposit them into RCI then. Also remember that current year Honor conversions are only a rate of 20 to 1. Only future years gets you 25 to 1. (With exception for DC and NYC, Waikiki penthouses that have higher conversion rates).

This is what the policy says...

Saved Points. On or before December 31 of the current year, Members may “save” any of the remaining ClubPoints from expiring by depositing these ClubPoints into the following year’s account. Saved Points may not be used to make Home Week reservations and may not be carried over beyond one (1) year. A fee applies to save points. Additional point saving options may be offered for previously saved ClubPoints.

RCI Deposit. Members may deposit current-year ClubPoints or previously Saved ClubPoints into the RCI Exchange Program for future weekly and nightly RCI Exchange reservations. RCI deposits are valid from the date of deposit through an additional two calendar years. Once ClubPoints are deposited into the RCI Exchange Program, the transaction is final and ClubPoints may not be returned to a Member’s Club account. An RCI Deposit Fee applies. An RCI Exchange fee will be charged at the time of confirmation or the initiation of an RCI search request. On or before December 31 of the current year, points previously deposited with RCI scheduled to expire at the end of the current year, may be extended for one additional year for use toward weekly or nightly exchange reservations in the following year for a fee.

BTW, converting HGVC to HHonors is a notoriously poor use of points.
Its should be done only to complete a stay with other points, as a last resort.
The points you need for a weekend in a HGVC resort only scores 1N at a hotel.

.

Don't be in a rush, you have a few months left to decide, much better than the people that post in December with the same question.

I would start following the RCI sightings closely, or even put in an OGS for 2018 and book there with points. There is no save fee when booking 2018 with 2017 points through RCI.

Well, it looks like the Honors conversion option is NOW off the table :(

huh?
You said you had "10,000 HGVC points from 2017 that you can't use this year and they will expire Dec 31".
You can still get Honors points with current years points. You just need to make a hotel reservation and it will be converted at a rate of 20 Honors points for each HGVC point (see details below).

Just call HGVC to make one Hotel Reservation using all of your 2017 HGVC points. Pick travel dates that are in the future (a few months out). Just confirm with the HGVC rep that a cancellation will result in your points being returned to your Honors account (not your HGVC account) which should be Business-As-Usual. Then a few days later cancel your hotel reservation. You should be able to log into your Honors account and cancel the hotel reservation online and the Honors points will be placed into your account.

For example
Hampton Inn & Suites Oahu/Kapolei
Rate Details STANDARD ROOM REWARD
Room: 2 QUEEN W/REFRIGERATOR NONSMOKING
02 Dec 2017 40,000 points
03 Dec 2017 40,000 points
04 Dec 2017 40,000 points
05 Dec 2017 40,000 points
06 Dec 2017 40,000 points

Total for stay 200,000 points

Cancellation Policy -
If you wish to cancel, please do so 72 hours prior to arrival to avoid cancellation penalties.

if you are having trouble using your points this year, IMHO it will put you into an even worse position next year.

Do you need all the points you currently own? (maybe it is time to liquidate some if you don't).

If you do, but this year was a 1 off situation, but you can't see using these extra points in conjunction with all the points you already have per year, consider letting a friend pay you to stay at a HGVC for a week ($52 fee for guest cert and you recover some or all of your MF). Alternativly, you can rent your home week(s) for whatever you want with no fee.

What I meant was converting unused points into HHonors online easily is off the table.

I was not aware of the cancellation policy, but that is an interesting strategy.

I am probably going to book some hotel reservations, unfortunately, the places I am planning do not have HGVC properties at those locations.

Rent 'em to someone, although that's against the rules...

Cheers.
