Today I made a reservation at the Crane and it correctly took from the saved bHC points first, then HGVC, then bHC. And later after looking at hotel prices I called to shorten the reservation by a day (since you have to call). Much to my amazement, after the new point totals came back about 15 minutes later it turned out that the points refund order is HGVC first, then bHC, then saved bHC.

So I called to correct this and found out that the order is set in stone and neither the CSRs nor their supervisors can do anything about it.

Well...almost anything. Since the odds of having someone steal my reservation at the Crane while I'm on the call were exceedingly low, I asked the CSR to instead cancel and rebook the reservation. And lo and behold, 15 minutes later my HGVC points show as used and my bHC points show as returned. Learn something new every day.

interesting...never knew that

Well, certainly makes sense that the save (any type) points are first out/last back. As to the other, seems that it could be in either order. I don't recall: is Crane HGVC or bHC. If HGVC, then it does make sense. If bHC, then not as much. But something has to be first, I guess.

Cheers.

…first out/last back….
First in, first out is the rule I was quoted. But of course the saved points were really first in (not that I wanted them back).

To me last in, first out makes a lot more sense since they take the most valuable points last. But it’s not how the code was written.

As @HuskerATL wrote, HGVC.

when borrowing next year points for an HGVC reservation I always have the choice whether to borrow HGVC or BHC.

For those who have recently done so what happens when you try to modify the reservation and are due a refund? Are you given the choice which bucket to refund into? I always thought I was.

Agree that it makes sense for saved points to be used first but ideally we should have the choice.

I just did this exercise today, shuffling W57th reservations to get all 2026 or borrowed 2027 points on reservations. When reducing the days of a mixed reservation, the newer borrowed points were dropped first, no choice in the matter. Keep in mind this was purely bHC points (beyond 59 days out), so I’m not sure how HGVC points mixed in would work in doing this.

But, as you noted, it is not first in/first out. The saved points did go in first, and they would come back last. So, it is FILO (or LIFO, if you prefer) despite what you were told. As least that's how it looked to me, It is definitely not FIFO.

Then it makes sense for the system to prioritize HGVC points. Not saying I agree, but I see the logic. Had it been bHC, I wonder if they would have been priortized.

Cheers.
