HGVC affiliate point question?

Since you can purchase affiliates for less $$ does it make sense if you already own HGVC to purchase an affiliate for more points and/or trading? Right now we have 7000 HGVC points and own at LV Hilton. We use just about the 7000 points every year and will retire in a year or 2 and will be traveling a bit more so I would like to pick up 5-7000 additional points in the next 2 years. My thoughts are that if we can pick up a week on Marco Island or Sanibel we would be able to use the week, we do like Marco, or use the points or trade. Am I assuming correctly? Also any ideas what resort we should look at in the above areas for purchase? We have stayed at several of the Marco Island resorts and found them to be great with Eagles nest 1 bdrm our favorite. Not stayed at any of the Sanibel resorts.

We bought at Tuscany and then at Bay Club for additional points. Since we were already owners HGVC waived the $399 initial membership fee and the $85 annual fee covers both properties. The slight downside is that we have to have two separate membership numbers because Bay Club has slightly different rules (e.g., you cannot borrow points until you have paid the maintenance for that year). I think an affiliate is an excellent way to add additional points since the price point is often much lower.

We are also interested in Sanibel since we live in Georgia. However, the few units I have seen available have been priced rather high on a $/point basis -- in other words they are great properties if you plan to stay there but not as good a deal if you are looking to trade within HGVC. I can only assume most owners in Sanibel either rent or do direct exchange when they do not use their week.

I own marco island and find the gold weeks to be an excelent value for hgvc points. I would stay away from the silver weeks because the maint fee to ponts cost are too high. The platinum weeks are nice but it takes 10 years plus to recover the extra purchase cost per point.

the gold weeks will sell for 1.00 to 1.30 per point. maint fee on my gold 2 bedroom is 723.00 and it give me 5000 points a year

Wow, great information JJ! I've been looking exclusively at platinum weeks but maybe I need to rethink.

if you can pick up a gold week on ebay for 5000.00

purchase price 5000.00 10 years maint fee (723.00 x 10) 7230.00 =12,230.00 over 10 years

that 1223.00 per year for 5000 points or .245 per point per year

so for 7000 point the annual cost would have to be 7000 x 24.5 = 1715.00
1715.00 per year -723.00 ( maint fee ) =992.00 ( purchase cost per year)

992.00 x 10 =9920.00 ( ten year purchase price)

so you would need to buy a platinum for 10,000 or less to break even over ten years

of course the longer you spread the cost out the better the platinum looks. There is also resale value to consider . If you buy a Marco island week resale you will be able to sell it for what you paid for it or maybe more in a few years.

if you like that idea than platinum will give you a lower cost per point if you take out the purchase cost. For me I just did not want to pay that much for a week so i justify gold using the 10 year method.
