I have had a search giong with RCI since last April looking for an Exchange into a 2 bedroom one week unit in the Palm Springs, CA area for the last week in January, 2013. I have them searching for availability in one of eight prescribed resorts in that area. It is now the end of October and they have found nothing. I don't believe RCI is even looking for me. Can anyone tell me how I can get some action from RCI before my time for vacation in January, 2013 has come and gone?

Frustrated in Des Moines.

Have you also been searching online yourself? Sometimes the RCI searches don't work as advertised. I always set one up, but them look often myself.

When I was looking for the week before Easter, Palm Springs kept coming up.

You may want to consider other alternatives as late as it's getting. Being locked into just a few resorts for a single week may not work out for you. RCI can only give you what they get deposited. Owners may use or rent those weeks instead of depositing them.

Availability seems tight

I looked at RCI for units available to rent (probably "extra vacations"). There were 4 for the period you're looking for, but I thought that they were overly pricey. You could probably do better on your own. I also looked on Interval (just for comparison sake) and their Getaways don't go that far out. But the last week of January is considered to be a Platinum or red week. Interval's assigned Traveler demand index was something like 115 or 120 (with 100=average demand). So that might be working against you.

Another thing working against you is that many TS won't let their owners make a reservation w/o having paid their maintenance fees. Some people delay making that payment for as long as they can. So, I suspect that could be temporarily limiting the "supply" of inventory.

As SFWilshire said, I would definitely be looking on my own, in addition to the on-going search. Also, I would consider a couple of backup plans
Rent through TUG classified - for example, I saw a week 4 and a week 5 at Marriott Desert Springs - an efficiency - - for $700 for the week

Widen your request dates (if you are able to do so).
Widen the area you're requesting - - for example, Lake Havasu has similar weather to Palm Springs. So does Phoenix (but end of January is high season for Phoenix).

Sheila -

I have not been searching myself. I just have RCI's system doing the search for me. I am wondering if their system is paying any attention to my search, or if my Red Week has lost trading power. Ever since Wyndam purchased RCI I have failed to make a requested exchange.

I can't speak for palm springs but for Hawaii I had an ongoing search going and found something myself even though the resort I found was in the list they were supposed to be searching for.

Btw - I checked II and they have Marriott for that week in a studio.
