Hi, we are going to Las Vegas for 4-5 days in June 2009. I'm wondering which is best - timeshare or a hotel of some sort? Can anyone give me an idea of how expensive it is to stay for a family of 2 adults/2 children (10 and 12)? Any suggestions for hotels? Thanks.

Vegas in June

If there are 4-5 of you, I would either stay in adjoining hotel rooms, or in a timeshare 2 bedroom unit rental.

A few thoughts:

Do you want to walk from your room, go down the elevator, and enter into a casino? - Hotel not timeshare
Do you want a kitchen to cook and prepare meals? - Timeshare not hotel
Do you want to be right on the strip? - Most hotels, few timeshares
Do you need a nice pool? - Hotels have nicer pools in general

I would choose a timeshare. With kids that age they might sneak down to the casino for an adventure etc, also the hotel can dump them right onto the strip.
Timeshares are much more family friendly and allow the room to relax and spread out. Normally I would recommend the Jockey Club as the best choice for economy and and nice furnishings but the construction around them makes them a no-no till 2010.

If you have a car the Las Vegas Hilton timeshare is a good choice, as well as hilton strip, grand desert, tahiti village and marriott.

No car-polo towers.

Summer Bay Resort one block off the strip will be in our brand new location by then. We prefer a ts for kids. Meals are easier and you don't have to always walk through the casino. Plus it's nice to have a separate bedroom for earlier bedtimes. Separate tv's and bathroom are a plus too.

I'd also recommend Grandview. A one-bedroom should be fine if your kids don't mind sleeping together on a sofa bed. There would be enough room for an inflatable bed if necessary, too.

The room layout is good because the bathroom can be accessed from either the bedroom or the living area without disturbing people in either sleeping area. The pool area is very nice and I'm sure your kids will enjoy a pool in June. And there are things at the South Point casino next door that the family could enjoy--a nice bowling alley and theater and many restaurants.

It's hard to say until you know whether you'll be staying in a hotel or a timeshare. You can get hotel rates through each casino's website or one of the other travel websites like Priceline, Expedia, etc. If you have a timeshare kitchen you can save a lot on meals.

There are a number of free things to do and see. If you are interested in seeing any shows, you can find out the prices of tickets online beforehand. If you rent a car (and I'd recommend that you do if you stay at the Grandview) that's another expense you can get on the internet. Parking is free & easy at all the big casinos. There are also a lot of things to see away from the Strip for which a car would be necessary.

We're not planning to stay a full week in Las Vegas. That's why I was wondering whether a hotel is cheaper than paying a week of timeshare - or is accommodation so expensive in Las Vegas that we're better to get a week of timeshare and not use the whole week. We don't own points at all - only weeks. It seems that most places in the US require a rental car.

Normally, I'd say try a Priceline.com bid and you can get a 4star for $100.00 a night or less, but you can't absolutely guarantee there would be two beds in the room. So.....try www.hotwire.com On Hotwire, you can specify the star level you want and you can specify two adults and two children. They currently have a "central strip" 4* for $87.00 a night. It's certainly worth checking it out before you decide. With Hotwire, you can see your choices neatly arranged for you. The 4* hotels will be MGM, Monte Carlo, Planet Hollywood (which was the Aladin), etc. They won't be Holiday Inns and Motel 6's.
