Help! Need To Activate Miles Account Or Lose Them

When we travel, we usually stay at Marriott hotels using our Marriott Visa Credit Card to accrue points. I read somewhere that I can also obtain airline mile at the same time. Is this true - this is not double dipping?
Can someone explain how to do this? We have an airline account that needs some activity within the next three months and we have no air travel plans. Does renting a car and applying miles keep an account active?
Thanks,
Kathy

I'm not sure by just adding miles through a purchase is considered activity that extends your account. I would check first. If not you're have to do a mile run, if the miles are substantial enough to want to keep. Find the cheapest flight available and fly there and back. Many people do that if they are close to a new level like gold or platinum, but I would think they would if they were to lose miles.

Regards.
Joe

You are correct, Kathy. With most airlines, any activity in your FF miles account will be sufficient to extend the life of the FF miles. However, if you have any uncertainty, list the airline here and we can tell you for sure.

When you use your Marriott credit card, you can earn only Marriott Rewards points, not FF miles. However, when you stay at a Marriott, you can earn either Marriott Rewards points or FF miles for your stay, depending on which option you have chosen. Use your Marriott Visa and earn Marriott Rewards points for the Visa charge on the same stay.

To change temporarily from earning points to earning FF miles for your stays, log into your Marriott Rewards account at Marriott.com and select "Edit Earning Preference" in the middle of the first page. Select "Miles/other program" and click on "Save" and you'll have the opportunity to select the program of your choice.

Also, with most major car rental companies, there is a section during the online reservation process where you can choose to earn FF miles for your car rental. Enter the airline and your FF account # and you'll be all set.

Thanks Dave and Joe. The airline is US Air. You have given me lots of ways to keep the account active. We are staying at a Marriott hotel next week so that might be the way to go.

Many frequent flyer programs have a site where you can purchase good through their "mall" and receive points in your FF account. I beleive many also have a program where you can register your credit card # through a website (can be any card) and make purchases at participating restaraunts and points will be credited to your account for your purchase.
US Airways has such a site at http://www.usairways.com/awa/content/dividendmiles/earnmiles/default.aspx. According to the site, points post in about 6-8 weeks.

Getting miles for dining out is great. You can find restaurants for whatever town you'll be in. I've earned thousands just since last August.

I think most airlines (not Air Canada) use Rewards Network's IDINE program.

http://mpdining.rewardsnetwork.com/

After a dozen 'dines' at listed restaurants wherever you are you get 10 FF miles per dollar ... and if you find a great place, spending $600 a month on the card you register with IDINE for that airline (or different card for another airline you might also belong to) would net you 6,000 FF miles or 72,000 a year, almost enough for a business class flight to Hawaii! Talk about eating your way to larger seats! :)

Just last year, IDINE and UA had a 25,000 bonus FF mile program just for spending $125 a month from Sept to Dec and you also got your 10x FF miles for your dollars spent too. That's a free NA economy flight.

I have 3 cards registered with UA and 1 with AA...and the FF miles can be used on their partners too (like Air Canada in my case with UA).

You can also earn miles sending flowers to a special person on a special occasion.

If we used our Marriott Visa card as a registered IDINE can, can we double dip both the FF pts and the Marriott Reward points?
answer is yes- u can double dip, getting both FF pts and the MRPs for eating at a qualified idine restaurant

The only problem that I find with the IDine system is that the selection of local restaurants (at least in my area) is very limited, usually to locally owned eateries. These seem to be the same restaurants that you find in the Entertainment Books, usually not the national chain type restaurants.
