Booked a trip with miles and points. At the last minute I'm looking at travel insurance. Today I looked to see what comparison costs would be if we purchased rooms and flights and it came to around $12K. Some of it was just guessing (Rome Westin) since the rooms are no longer available.

I went to the Travel Info forum and there was a sticky about travel insurance. I still don't know what to do. Looked at the link for the website that lets you compare several insurance suppliers. Now I think we should see if AAA has anything to offer. Plus we have to see what our health insurance offers for travel benefits.

Does anyone know if booking the trip with miles/points causes problems with the travel insurance packages?

Any pointers for travel insurance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Suzzanne

If you need to redeem the insurance by canceling the trip, they ask for actual receipts and documentation that the trip was canceled and only reimburse for any actual loss.

It would be interesting to know how they evaluate rewards points. They will not reimburse for the rack rate of hotel rooms or airline tickets unless that money was actually paid.

We have a trip planned to China in October and this is the first time in my life I have booked travel insurance.

The reason is the H1N1 flu. I feel with the percentages of infection rates they are predicting.....there is a chance that something could happen right before or during the trip.

Is that your reason too, Quilter?

Jan

P.S. Ours isn't with points so I can't answer your question on what they will pay.

Thanks m61376 for your comments.

Jan, I wasn't thinking as much about the flu or illness until yesterday. We fly from Chicago, through Miami to get to Rome. With the recent hurricane activity I thought there might be a chance of flights getting delayed or cancelled because of storms.

Then yesterday while getting my pre-travel haircut I noticed my hairdresser wasn't her normal, bubbly self. When I asked she said she had just come back to work (grudgingly) after being in bed for the past 36 hours. She didn't know if it was the illness or the Alka-seltzer flu that was making her feel so puny. Great :(. I came home, showered, changed clothes and took extra vitamin C.

Hi Suzzanne ... Can't help you with the Italy trip and what they'd cover, but I did make two claims with Travel Guarde for 2 timeshare trips (AC's) booked through Interval that had to cancel due to illness. Their rule was to call the TS and find out what the daily rate was and the reimbursement was that rate x 7 nights -- up to a max of $1000. So, with flights, etc., it wouldn't normally cover it all...but I assume you can buy more insurance coverage externally. The Marriott insurance for MVCI covers up to $10,000 I believe but not for hotel stays. You might try Travel Guard (AIG) as they have a lot of different policies. Anyways, I don't think it's based on the cost of points but on the cost of the room rate. The claims I made took a Doctor's note and signature that it wasn't a pre-exisiting reason for cancellation...and the paid it promptly. If your trip is next week you might already be too late to get insurance.

I'm off to Paris at the end of Sept ... now you got me thinking about getting insurance.

With FF miles I think you can cancel up to the day before the flight and get your points back, but probably a $150 fee per ticket. Marriott will probably give you a 'portion' of your points back if it was booked as part of the package.

You will love the Amalfi area. Have a great time.

Thanks Brian.

You've already helped a lot on this trip because it was at your suggestion I booked the Westin's in Rome and Florence. I'm really looking forward to those two stays.

I'll call Travel Guard to see if I can get an advisor to discuss some options that will work for us. It will give me more direction.

Thanks again,
Suzzanne

One more thing Suzzanne re: Amalfi ... you don't want to drive there, that coast drive is something else but one of the best scenic drives you'll ever see.

I hope this is still current info: Salvatore Lucibello of DriveAmalfi info@driveamalfi.com was perfect for us. He lives in Amalfi and speaks English very well. Our half day tour of Amalfi coast cost 400 euros. He also picked us up on Rome and drove us to our hotel in Sorrento for 400 euros the prev. day. Very nice guy...but there's another Salvatore there that doesn't speak English and is not a very good tour guide at all, so make sure you get the right one if you take that idea. Not cheap but great memories. There are other services if you can't get this one ... I searched and found one which might be the same one with a slightly different name: http://www.amalfi-drive.com/

Thanks again Brian. I've emailed driveamalfi to see if your driver is still available and what they have to offer with us coming from Capri.

I ended up with AAA for insurance. It was easy by going to the local office we usually deal with and talk someone in the travel department. I called Travel Guard and was told they will only cover expenses for what you prepay for the trip. Not expenses regarding cancellation in the event we get charged by one of the hotels for a "no show" because of weather delay or medical problem.

Brian,

I received an email back from Salvatore Lucibello. This was part of his tour suggestion:

"We typically (purely optional) stop off at a Medieval hillside village near Ravello to enjoy lunch in a small inexpensive local family Ristorante way off the beaten track which has extensive views of Ravello and the Coast from its shaded terace."

Did you have lunch at this place?

No we didn't have lunch there but do it if you can ... Ravello is way way up there and has beautiful vistas. Don't forget your cameras! :) Glad to hear you heard from him directly -- insist that he is your driver. I think all his cars are Mercedes. He pointed out his house in Amalfi ... it was 300 steps up from where he parks the car each night! No wonder all the people there are slim. He showed me the nude beach but it was 450 steps down - so we didn't go. :( I'm not so good at stairs in my old age.

A very nice hotel to run in a see is in Positano .. La Sirenuse. It was featured in a movie called Only You ... as was the whole Amalfi drive. And make sure you have some Limoncello icy cold.
