For members that have been to Aruba (Aruba Surf Club) recently, please advise if the 1 Bedroom Unit (Livingroom TV) can access movie channels (Nexflix, Hulu,) etc. In addition, which car rental it is recommended?

Thank you so much

There now. No smart TV options but easy to use a fire stick in the TV either in the LR or BR. The internet is fast enough to stream at about 14 up and down. We used Tropic car rental, always have. Not at the airport but they meet you in the exit area (inside) and shuttle you to their location just a few blocks away then reverse the process on departure. $330 for 11 days though I reserved almost a year out. Nice people, Hyundai Accent.

There's a lot you can do having a car but it's not absolutely necessary. Taxis will take you back and forth to the modern, fully-stocked supermarkets or to one of the best steakhouses in the world, El Gaucho Steakhouse, which is downtown. It's the closest thing to a real Argentine steakhouse that you'll find outside of Argentina. On the other side of the island, you'll find The Flying Fishbone which is extraordinary but it's a long taxi ride. I'd highly recommend Gianni's for their Italian Spaghetti al Formaggio Parmigiano - it's a very special dish and not often found and a very easy walk from either of the timeshares.

Any tips on how to avoid international plan on cell phone to active Waze or google maps etc for road service? We would like to drive around the island.

We have T-mobile Magenta Max and data is free as are texts, same is true for the base Magenta but it's even slower. Phone is $2.50 per minute I believe. Works for Google maps, used it today. I think all major carriers have an international plan that would be workable. Also google maps will work offline once set up while on Wifi. Even the phone tour options should work offline.

We find that about the only service that works outside the U.S. is Netflix.

Use a VPN on an Android tablet with a USB-c to HDMI cable. The only US-based streaming service I haven't been able to get to work is NFL Sunday Ticket, as it hijacks your location services and that's a lot more complicated to spoof, but I've been able to work with Paramount, Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+.

Been to Aruba 3 times and never rented a car. Don’t need one. I did rent a jeep one day to go off roaring on the other side of the island. As far as the tv, never had much time to watch while I was there. Hope you have great time! It’s a really fun place!

On my fire stick right now and Disney Plus, Netflix and Amazon Prime work though prime gives an altered set of options. Philo, Fubo, Peacock only work if I use my VPN . The free services like Roku Channel, Pluto TV, and Xumu do not work without using the VPN. Tubi does work.

This is always an interesting topic for Aruba, esp for the High Rise area. One can certainly make do without a car. There are savings having a car that offset much of the cost if not all for many people by the time you figure the airport round trip, grocery store trips, a trip downtown and restaurants with a taxi needed. Normally one might consider the bus but that's likely not a good idea in todays world. For us we enjoy the flexibility, freedom and control. I have the Chase Sapphire Reserve which covers the insurance as a primary insurer. Once we came in on a holiday and Tropic wasn't available that day so we took a Taxi to the resort we were staying at initially (LaCabana in Low Rise area) and got the car 3 days later when we were going to be moving to Surf Club. On two of our trips we had more than 5 people so it would have been double the taxi for the trips where all were going.

We have Verizon. Would need to buy intl plan but I like the tip on downloading Google maps at the hotel while having Wifi. I have my fire stick ready. I cannot wait to get there it is SO cold in New York. How is the immigration process now? Is the hotel busy?

Maps.me app. No need for cell data. Download aruba map

The Surf Club is busy but not super busy. The pool chairs are used but one can find one without going down early to do so. Getting through the airport was the same other than social distancing and showing the ED card on our phone as we exited the luggage pick up area. Actually immigration itself was far less busy than on previous trips. Unless you need contact outside the resort you may not want to do the International plan Or you could add it later if needed. Wifi calling should give you options at the resort and at a lot of other places. Many businesses have wifi, esp restaurants.

The fire stick was a little tricky at first. Make sure you use cursor mode for the fire stick browser when signing in to wifi at the resort.

I’d def add Yemanja- food is fantastic
And, with all deference to Pat, I cringe when I see Papamiento recommended. I have never been treated so rudely at any restaurant anywhere ever. I never bash a place, but trust me- they don’t deserve your business. There are so many excellent places.
Also Terrazzo Italiano is another overlooked goodie

Sorry about your bad treatment at Papiamento.
my daughter and SIL went Saturday and had a great meal with excellent service. They were also there in April and had the same experience.

going next week to Papillon after a 5-6 year absence- will report back on that one.

can't believe I forgot Yemanja. Was there last week. Def a fav.
We went to Taste My Aruba in April and were underwhelmed but many people rave about it.

I haven’t seen Casa Nonna at the Ritz Carlton recommended yet. Excellent food and service and usually has music. A short walk along the beach from the Marriott Timeshares.

For breakfast try Linda’s Dutch Pancakes. IMO much better than Diana’s and the owner accepts Bitcoin in payment!

I'm assuming you're headed there this weekend, but in case it's not until next weekend, wanted to make sure you were aware of the new entry requirements as of February 3rd. If you're fully vaccinated, including a booster, you no longer have to test to enter Aruba. You will have to furnish proof of vaccination using a Smart Health card. Some state systems, pharmacies and health system are compatible. I know in NY the Excelsior Pass Plus is Smart Health card compatible, and some pharmacies use the Clear Pass system, also compatible. Vaccine cards or copies are not acceptable. It must be a verified system that generates a QR code readable by Smart Health card scanners.

Great news. Maybe. ( i like the idea of a C negative plane) Here are Smart Health Card compatible providers.
NYState Excelsior Pass Plus has been unable to verify me after multiple tries and escalations so I was able to use MyChart Epic. Walgreens also has me on file.

Pat- fyi the Nassau County dept of health has been great at correcting those stupid errors. The people at Excelsior Pass can’t change I do and had referred us there. Somehow the person giving my hubbie his booster changed the spelling of his first name; the pass found it but issued a first name with a different spelling. The Nassau County BOH person was great. 1 phone call and it was corrected!
And I’m with you- wasn’t sure if the testing was better for the plane. But gotta tell you, we were there the beg of Feb and felt so safe!!
