Most if not all these companies/middlemen/brokers provide little value added besides getting a week from the actual owner in some form or another, marking it up in various ways, and providing a confirmation to the tenant. Sometimes the owner will list with them directly, sometimes they will procure the week on Redweek. Sometimes the markup will be 8% (Redweek "verified and protected"), $500 (Vacation Candy), or even $1000+ (various "brokers"). Some will use an escrow service, some won't. Some will offer a better cancellation policy than others.
Often times a renter will think they are more protected by using these services with a credit card but the reality is that the owner always controls the reservation (even after the name is changed) and these middlemen can't control the small likelihood of bad events and therefore also limit the renter's ability to recoup funds on their own. Redweek's contract states clearly that renters are not allowed to chargeback with the credit card company and any renter who does may get sued and owe all attorney's fees. Hawaii Weeks states that they want you to pay via Venmo ("if you are paying by credit card, please do so through Venmo: HawaiiWeeks") which also limits the ability to charge back. Vacation Candy's contract states that, once paid, it's non-refundable for any reason even though most owners offer better terms.
So, you are paying a substantial premium for "peace of mind", but I'm not how much it matters in 99% of cases and how much actual peace of mind you are really getting. Most owners just want to rent out their weeks at a fair price. Sometimes it's better to deal with one directly, especially if you envision renting timeshares often. YMMV.
HawaiiWeeks was running pretty well for a few years. They would take my booked weeks and rent them on my behalf, allowing me to bring in a small profit after maintenance fees. Gordon was pretty good, but never quick on the pay-out. In 2024, that all changed. He took my weeks for 2024, booked them and never paid me for them. I have been emailing him and his office staff for months and still haven't been paid.
Be warned if you give him weeks to sell as it appears he isn't paying for the service anymore.
