We have 2 weeks booked in Kona for Oct 2007. We are on the East Coast and have looked at booking our airfare now. We are considering leaving out of Phoenix to Kona and staying at the Phoenix airport the night before and the night after on the return flight. We have seen a fare of $392pp from PHX to KOA round trip. This fare looks good to us. Any thoughts. We believe we can book a flight later on from the East coast to Phoenix at reasonable cost.

Also look at 'fly & drive' packages on various airlines and hotwire.com. I would guess that you could get a better price by buying one ticket rather than splitting it up. Just a guess though.

We will look at the fly and drive pkg. Thanks. We checked on the direct from both NY and Fl (not sure where we will be at that time) and the fare out of PHX was the best. I also would rather break up the flight over 2 days rather than flying about 13 hours on one day.

You can still break up the flt. over two days with one ticket. Most, if not all, airlines allow a 'stopover' when flying ti HI. I just checked hotwire.com and they don't have 'fly/drive' packages but the airline sites will. Also orbitz.com etc.

I just checked orbitz for JFK>HNL, 10/1>10/14, and the 'fly/drive' was $882/per person. On united.com it was a little higher-$928/per. UA does allow only one stopover however. :(

We got a price of $392 on Hawaiian Air from PHX to KOA. I also see Delta for $218 pp from MCO (orlando) to phx. These are w/o car rental. Thanks.

I don't know if this helps, but October through early December are off-season and the airlines usually run specials. I recently booked a flight from KOA to JFK for early Dec this year for $399 RT on AA. October may not be as easy because of the Ironman. You can try farecompare.com to get an idea of pricing.
