Hands On with the Apple iPhone 4S - by Dan Costa/PCMag.com

Apple's new smartphone has a new OS, a dual-core A5 CPU, an 8-megapixel camera, and advanced voice control. What does all this mean to the average user? We'll have to get it into PC Labs before we issue a final judgment, but our first impressions are very positive.

One of the most useful new features is Siri, the voice recognition application. It is completely integrated into every part of the iPhone 4S and is absolutely amazing.

One neat feature is that you can associate contacts or places with common names. For example, you tell the phone "John Smith is my brother", and from then on, you can say things like "Call my brother at home".

Another example: You could say "The grocery store is Safeway on Park Street." Then when you think of it, you can record a "to do" item, such as "Buy milk at the grocery store". Then later in the week when you walk into the grocery store, the iPhone will automatically bring of a transcript of all the items you need to buy or do at the store. Simply amazing!

You can see a small sample of using Siri by watching the video on this page:

Siri is awesome stuff. I still use the app on my iPhone from when it first was released, but the new integration with the new phone is fantastic.

I will because it's made in China if I can get it at the subsidized rate. I needed a new one in Feb since mine got stolen, so I'm not sure if I can just yet. I was eligible at that time for the subsidized rate, even though it was only seven months since I had bought it, so AT&T might do the same courtesy for me now, but am not sure. I have several wireless services with AT&T at the unlimited rates, so they tend to try to keep me when I call (online it doesn't show I'm eligible). FWIW, it's cheaper for me to terminate my AT&T contract and move to Verizon or Sprint with a new phone vs paying the online price for it from AT&T.

Siri in the Apple Store is a piece of doggy too, but presumably it's been made much better after Apple acquired it. Until Apple Siri comes out the best app for voice recognition is Vlingo.

As for the 4S, i'm seriously considering a pre-order on it to replace my 3GS....
