Any input on this resort? Can exchange into (RCI) in August and thinking of maybe a trip to Vegas since no East coast beaches are matching.

I will also have a voucher from Southwest cause of my damaged luggage and clothes put out on runway when storm coming and flight delayed.

We won't be renting a car, maybe using their shuttle service to other casinos on the strip and also the new South Coast Resort that just recently opened across the street.

Not sure if going for the full week, so I don't know if I want to use my RCI week of rent a place out there. What recommendations would you have for renting? 3 or 4 nights?

TIA

I wouldn't stay there without a car. I live in the area, and I can tell you, other than South Coast, which is walkable, you are out in the middle of nowheresville. You need a car, plain and simple. Even if there is a shuttle (which I don't know to be a fact). If you can't see your way to renting one, then don't stay here.

If you do decide to go, I can give you directions for getting places without the normal "strip" traffic.

Seems odd to me that you are considering Vegas in lieu of east coast beaches....

Don't get me wrong, I love Vegas and I will probably go over a couple of times this summer, but it's a big difference between Vegas & the beach.

Besides being well over 100 degree's in August, you will also have the possibility of monsoons in Vegas in August.

I wouldn't personally exchange a week to get into Vegas in August either. Why not just get a cheap mid week package deal at a strip hotel on expedia or one of the other web travel sites?

If you do decide to go and stay out on the south end of the strip, I agree with Fern, you will need a car.

Just my two cents worth...

Ditto to needing a car unless you just want to lay by the pool and frequent the Coast casino next door. I do like the Grandview, just not w/o a car.

I wouldn't count on using the South Coast's shuttle. There have been times in the past when the management of the Coast Casinos has decreed that you had to show a hotel key to use their shuttle.

I know that seems nit-picky. But they really should do that, according to the law. They are not licensed as a general public shuttle service, but as a special shuttle service for their properties. In Vegas there is a big difference, and if they don't have the type of license Bell Trans has, they are only suppose to be carrying their own hotel guests.

You may be lucky, they may not be enforcing the rule when you are there. But they may very well be.

Also, what Ric said about the monsoons. I wasn't thinking. August is monsoon month. The evenings will often be full of rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning. And occasionally, flash flooding. If you do come, and if you do drive, don't ever, ever enter a street filled with rushing water.

Thanks for the replies.

Not sure if we are going, it was just a thought for DH's August vacation.
No it's not that I want to give up a beach vacation. It's after searching for a year and no match with RCI( always offered a rental - another thread) as has been the past 2 or 3 yrs, I was just thinking of something to do.

And I hate to waste an exchange in Vegas if not staying the entire week, but will be loosing the week soon. Extend it ? More money for RCI and no guarantee of a match.

I did check hotels on the strip and the price is not bad. Don't need a fancy expensive place, cause we'd be gone most of the time anyways. Maybe wait and see if DH gets a long w/e or use his personal days to extend a w/e and go then

I know August is hot, but is it like AZ with low humidity. Didn't know about the monsoons.

Thanks

Normally it is very low humidity, just like AZ.

But in monsoon season the clouds come up from either the Gulf of Mexico or California (I can't remember which one) and it can be very humid and uncomfortable.

We were in Palm Springs a couple years ago in August. It was well over 100 with gray humid weather, it was very very unpleasant.

You can usually find Las Vegas timeshare weeks on the RCI last minute rental sites.....the Grandview, Fairfield, The Carriage House, and the Cliffs at Peace Canyon are regularly available. 7 nights for about $300.

Here is an example of what was there for 4th of July '06 just last night

Again, the Cliffs would require a car. The good news is rental cars can be cheap (it's the gas that's expensive!). Otherwise, consider a south strip hotel (depending on price considerations). Often you can get into Flamingo for $65 a night, Imperial Palace for a little less. Check their web sites. Go to Las Vegas Advisor-or is it Billhere- I think they do a monthly check of the rates. Be sure you check where your lodging is located before you book. If you are mid strip then you can walk the strip, monorail it or take a bus downtown (which I recommend you do once to see the overhead light show). The Grandview is nice and frequently has availability. You could drive and park in one of the downtown hotel garages and explore on foot.;)

The south trolley now stops at South Coast Casino and Grandview, but you only get as far is Mandalay Bay. You need to get off the south trolley and transfer to the north trolley for the other strip hotels.

Grandview shuttle leaves for the Tropicana every half hour, last pickup is 2AM. Grandview does not guarantee seating on their shuttle.

Grandview has Shuttle Service which I believe now runs every 15 minutes to the Strip!!

The Cliffs also has Shuttle Service which leaves every hour!!
