I'll post this on the TUG review for others in the future.

http://cancun2010ls.shutterfly.com/

My husband and 2 kids traveled from Philadelphia to Cancun. We traded into the Grand Mayan using our Hilton points via SFX.

Email the resort 3 days ahead of time. They will send you a voucher for transportation. However, they didn’t have us on their list despite the fact that we had the voucher. Nevertheless, they did take us to the resort free of charge. Be sure you go OUTSIDE to find the person with the Grand Mayan sign. Do not stop and ask a soul about transportation inside the airport – these are people trying to get you to take a timeshare tour. We also called the resort 3 days ahead of time – not the 800 number, but the hotel directly (yes, we had to pay long distance). We requested buildings 1 – 5 and our request was noted and honored. I can’t promise this is due to the call, but it was worth it. Buildings 1 – 7 are all fine. I also suggest you request the lake view side. There are no ocean views, but we didn’t know this, thus faced the generator. We got used to the slight noise and it wasn’t a big deal.
We had a 2 bedroom unit.

Unit Features:

Bedrooms – Both bedrooms really look like the master bedroom. I guess you could say the real master bedroom was the one with the plunge pool on its balcony. Other than that, both bedrooms had the same features. Bedrooms have a king-size bed, a nice sofa and chair (my daughter slept on the sofa and son slept on the bed), a balcony, and a bathroom that includes a soaking tub. There is one mid-sized closet in the room, along with adequate drawer space. There is a television. Bathrooms are supplied with shampoo, towels, lotion, soap, toilet paper. I didn’t notice a hairdryer, but I didn’t use one on this vacation.

Living/Kitchen Area – 2 large sofas, one chair, and a large, flat screen TV. There is a big kitchen table. The kitchen had no dishwasher. One thing that irritated me was the sign on the sink warning if you don’t clean up on the last day, you will be charged. There is a deck with chairs off the living room.

Laundry: Laundry room is down the hall – we didn’t use it. I believe it is coin operated. It was on the 2nd floor (which we were on). The ice machine is on the 3rd floor.

Deck – There is a big deck with a small table, 2 lounge chairs and 2 chairs – and a nice, cold plunge pool.

Maid Service – Excellent maid service daily. Please tip them.
Wifi – Available in the room for 950 pesos per week. They also have a cybercafé if you just want to check your email once or twice for less (but you will still pay).

Pool Area – There are 3 pools. The main pool (near the beach) is the largest. This is for Grand Mayan and Mayan Palace guests. There were always plenty of chairs – absolutely no need to go down and save chairs. I really liked this pool. There are “lounge chairs” in the pool and other fun areas that allow you to basically suntan in the water. There are also pool bars on both sides of this pool – happy hour is 11 – 1 (2 for one drinks). There is a big snack restaurant at this pool where you can sit down and have lunch or an early dinner. We never ate there.
Grand Mayan guests have 2 other pool choices – both very nice and smaller. One of them is a sandy area with a “lazy river.” I quote this because it’s so lazy you won’t notice it moving. The other Grand Mayan pool is right by the lobby. We loved this pool, too. There were really interesting lounge chairs – very cozy. This pool has a pool bar, too. There is a restaurant there - The Blue Fish – that serves lunch. I will review this restaurant later in this review.

Beach Area – This is the worst beach I have ever seen. I heard it was rocky, but I didn’t realize it IS a rock. There is no way you can swim here- and no one was swimming. There was a red flag up the entire time we were there, and even if the flag were green, I can’t see swimming possible. Maybe you could walk over the rocks and finally get past them – but even then, more rocks. We walked over to the Iberostar (long walk and I don’t really recommend it – we thought we were walking past an abandoned property, but then got yelled at by someone, so we think we may have been trespassing). The beach at Iberostar was fabulous with banana boats – made us so sad we were staying at Grand Mayan.
Beach Activities- They have jet skiis, scuba and snorkeling. We did neither. I would have no desire to snorkel off this beach. My son took a “lesson” in the pool for scuba. Within 5 minutes the guy said he had to pay if he wanted to do more – nothing like other resorts where they really give a mini-lesson. When we didn’t want to pay, they were quite rude.

Restaurants – The Grand Mayan Resort really lacks here. Be aware that not all of the restaurants are open all days – so be sure you know which ones close on which days.
Blue Fish – This is only open for lunch. My daughter loved her club sandwich. I didn’t like the cerviche, but perhaps someone else would have. However, when I tried to say I didn’t want it, I was charged and yelled at. If you read my other reviews, you will know I am not the complaining type. I am always polite and respectful of waiters and all workers as everyone should be. But this waiter was aggressive and actually grabbed the silverware off the table furiously. This restaurant is outside by the pool.
Gong – We loved this restaurant – too bad it closes Friday and Saturday nights. I had the dragon roll and spicy tuna roll – excellent. This restaurant is inside, above the gift shop.
Italian (the name escapes me) - It was good, not great. The service was pleasant. This restaurant is by Gong, also upstairs and inside.
Havana Moon – This restaurant is by the ocean. We sat outside and loved the breeze and view. The food is adequate – good pizza and sandwiches – don’t expect gourmet.
De Largo – This is buffet. We never ate here. I know the seafood buffet is 330 pesos per person. We rarely saw people eating here except with a salesperson before a timeshare presentation in the morning.

Property –This is like a village. It’s a very long walk from one place to the next. If you’re in buildings 1-7, expect to walk 10 minutes to the pool. This was fine with us as we’re young and healthy, but it would be very difficult for someone older or unfit. If you are in buildings 8 or beyond, expect to wait for very unreliable shuttle service or walk a very long distance. I really didn’t like the vastness of the place.
Golf – Big, beautiful golf course. I don’t golf, but I did jog it (at 6 am – don’t gasp, golfers, I wouldn’t interrupt your precious golf time). The friends we stayed with golfed a few times and enjoyed it. However, they were given 16 free rounds of golf, but weren’t allowed to share a golf bag. They were told they would need to rent a 30 dollar golf bag so that each person had their own bag.

Sales/Staff – It rained one day so we decided to do the timeshare tour. It was 4 hours long. I didn’t mind since it was raining, but oh my gosh. First we had a buffet breakfast – we brought the kids, so that was nice. The saleswoman was very pleasant during breakfast. We then went to the torture chamber where the pitch started at 149,000 for 4 weeks down to about 2000. Don’t BUY. We did get 1000 pesos off our bill plus 10% off anything we purchased (food, etc) so it was “worth it,” due to the rain.

Planned Activities – There were very lame night shows. There was water aerobics, stretching classes, etc at the pool. These were free.
Spa/Gym – The gym is 100 pesos per day to use unless you’re a grand lux member (who knows how you become grand lux – maybe buy a timeshare?) But I didn’t realize there was a fee at first. I actually asked and the lady at the front said it was free. So I used the gym two times before someone told me there was a cost. I also used the spa facilities (the free ones). There is a sauna, steam room, and beautiful outside Jacuzzi area.
Kids Club- My kids are too old now, but we did see a little hut by the pool. We never saw any kids there, nor did we see staff. But we didn’t ask either.

Outings – We didn’t rent a car. We used the shuttle to get into Playa. My son went diving in Playa – not through the resort – and had a wonderful time. We ate at Parilla’s (thanks to a Tugger recommendation). It was on 5th and 8th – very nice and right by all of the shopping. Shopping was fun and the beach at Playa is very nice. Be aware that Playa is quite a distance from the Grand Mayan. Grand Mayan is not in Riviera Maya – it is between Cancun and Riviera Maya.
We also went into Puertos Morelos and ate at the Mother in Law (yes, that’s the name of the restaurant). We were told it would be a beautiful restaurant overlooking the ocean. It did overlook the ocean – with card tables – but it was pleasant. Don’t go there for great food, but certainly the food was okay.

Suitability: This resort is suitable for those who can easily walk distances. The pool area is big enough that little children probably won’t bother adults who are reading quietly. The kids will love the pools. I, myself, will not return. The lack of a good beach and pleasant service made my stay less than ideal. If you like to walk and don’t care about a good beach or abundant restaurants, this is a good choice. If you like good wine and good food, be prepared to leave the property – and do a little more research about restaurants than I did beforehand.

Zac495 (Ellen):

I certainly agree that the so-called beach at the Grand Mayan Riviera Maya is nothing but a rock. However, your photos seem to show the children having a great time in the pool. I think the Grand Mayan Riviera Maya has once of the best pools I have ever seen.

We basically toured most of the time and used our room as a pleasant base of operations. We just loved the beach in Playa del Carmen. If we go back to the Playa del Carmen or Cancun area, I will try to book at the Royals.

I hope you had a good time when the weather permitted. We certainly did but, I am sorry you did not have such a positive experience that would make you want to return. I was thinking about taking my family to the GM Nuevo Vallarta or GM Aculpulco in the future. Hopefully, the beaches there are better.

I really did enjoy your photographs. Thanks for posting them.

Thanks for the report. I really do appreciate an objective report from a non-owner. Those of us who own there sometimes get "glassy-eyed" about our wonderful purchase.

We own at GM and really enjoyed our 2 visits there. I was disappointed to hear about the service staff as they were so friendly and helpful the two times we have been there. The first time we went was 3 weeks after Hurricane Wilma and were so impressed with the staff. They were working cheerfully and were so friendly. The last time we went, was in February 2007 and the only GM buildings were 1-7. They were working on the new pools and we only had 4 restaurants - Del Lago, Tramonto, Balche (pool restaurant) and Havana Moon. We did not go to Tramonto, but did eat at least once at the others. We took the bus to Playa every other day and did cook some in our unit.

While I love to go on beach vacations, I am not one to get into the ocean, so the rocks were not a concern for me. We do not mind the walk from the units further from the pools, but know that many people do. We look at it as a form of exercise since we tend to plop down under a palapa or umbrella and read when there. I do like the spa, but do not use the exercise equipment. It is free for GM owners and I had understood that it was also free for SFX exchangers, so that was a surprise.

Thanks again - I value your comments.

Interesting comment about the rocky beach - I thought the beach restoration did the entire strip from Cancun down to Playa, but I guess not.

The sofas in bedrooms sound nice, as does the plunge pool. However, the rudeness of some staff members is shocking.

Sorry I didn't stay that extra week in our empty villa at the Royal Caribbean so we could have hung out together a bit!

There's no doubt that it's a nice place! Stay glassy eyed if you're happy, pittle. Piano - we had a very good time. I don't allow rocky beaches or rude people to ruin my vacation (perhaps a slight irritation, but I realize I'm so fortunate in my life to have a healthy family and the money to vacation - too many people allow stupidity to destroy and distort beautiful memories). But I feel I owe tuggers a true picture through my eyes. Others may have different experiences - and the rudeness could have been an anomaly. I do think I would try GM in Cabo - as that's a place I really would like to visit. pjrose - I would have loved to have met you - another vacation!

Do you think my review is too negative? I did love the pools and we really enjoyed relaxing by them - and had an overall nice time.

The lack of beach would keep ME from ever going back, but I realize that wouldn't matter to everyone. I'm too lazy to go to Playa for the beach more than one day (I'm the same way everywhere - give me a nice beach at the resort for most of my beachy days). You're right - the beach at Playa is wonderful and people most certainly can go there and enjoy.

I don't think you were negative, just honest. I would much rather read honest reports about resorts so that I know what to expect when I go.

The GM in Cabo is nice. We went there last October and it is a place we do want to return to. It is much smaller than the other GM resorts. We loved that we could walk to old San Jose to restaurants or to the Mega for miscellaneous snacks and beverages. (I have pics on my Picasa link.)

Thanks for the report Ellen - I am going in the fall but staying at the Mayan Palace, not the Grand - thru SFX. Can I still get the free transportation from the airport to the hotel???

We stayed at the GM three years ago and were quite impressed. We had the same type of two bedroom unit you described (by the way there are hair dryers mounted on the wall). Up until then I thought a beautiful beach was an absolute requirement for my timeshare exchange. But the pool at the Grand Mayan was superior to any other I've ever seen. And we are the adventurous type, we took the shuttle into Playa several times and did a day trip to Isla Mujures which I'll never forget.

We didn't encounter any rude service at GM or anywhere else. That was my first trip to Mexico and I really had to be convinced that it wasn't going to be terrible. I ended up loving the experience. I'd love to go back.

Yes, there were people on our shuttle going to the Grand. I can't promise it's free, but I would assume so. OH! I should add to the review - going home costs 15 dollars per person on the shuttle. But a cab is only 30 bucks - so if you have more than 2 people, take the cab back.

I'm sure if you buy, they shuttle you back free. :hysterical:
We were told the Grand Mayan costs 50% more than buying at the Palace. Not sure why.

I agree - if you're the adventurous type (I did want to go to Isla Mujures, but my husband didn't feel like it) you can get the beaches elsewhere. So glad you had fun!

We've been going to this property since 2006 and will actually be there Saturday :whoopie: , sooo ready for a vacation. We were hoping the new lazy river would be done and open by now, but guess that's going to depend on the economy and the completion of the new units surrounding it.

Eventually, we'll make it to the other properties, but for now RM "fits the bill", so to speak. Plus, over the last couple of years, there was always something new to experience each visit - Havana Moon (rebuilt after storm), first new GM pool, second new GM pool, Lazy River??. As for the beach, I figure it's just part of the natural cycle - one storm took it away, another will bring it back. Still nice to hang out at and we usually spend a day in Playa anyway (living in FL does has it's advantages of getting a beach fix fairly easily).

We've eaten from pretty much all of the venues offered there, except at Gong and the BBQ Buffet on the beach. Can't recall any complaints or dissappointments.

I try to keep up with what's going on by checking here and TripAdvisor. I'll probably do my usual fact finding mission talking to the employees and "wandering" around.

This site is the most all around informative for everything/anything Timeshare!

I have to agree with most of the comments by the OP. Although the resort is nice it's way too spread out. We were there January 2009 and my oldest daughter and her family paid rack rate to stay there the same time we were going with my younger daughter and her family. Daughter that was paying checked in early that day since they were already in Cancun the prior week and were given building 5. I emailed the resort that this was a family vacation with children ages 1-5 and we needed to be close to main pool area buildings 1-7 since toddlers needed to go back and forth for feedings, naps etc. and could we be put into same building on same floor near each other.

When we arrived for check in I handed them copies of the emails and they told us we would be in building 21 which was the furthest from the pool. I said this was a family vacation with small children and we needed to be close together so I could babysit grandkids when my daughter's and their husbands wanted to go out in the evening. Their answer was they could move my daughter and her family to building 21 after they were already unpacked and already in the pool. I really got pissed and insisted on first speaking to a supervisor who said nothing was available in buildings 1-7 and it was only 1:00PM three hours before regular check in. I then asked to speak to a manager and again was told that ugh nothing was available to check in right away other than building 21. I said that we didn't ask to be checked in immediately just wanted to be together in building 5 next to daughter who was already checked in. He said then we needed to wait for something to become available which could mean we would not be checked in until 4:00 PM and they could not guarantee the same floor or the same building. My daughter then put my one year old grandson on the check in counter and he proceeded to start crying since it was his normal nap time.

Within 10 minutes of his crying they came back and told us a clean room was ready in building 5 but it was one floor below my other daughter. We said fine and checked in.

After that check in horror we had no problems and had a great time. I also didn't like the unswimable beach but never had any incidents of rude behavior. Front desk seemed to go out of there way to be pleasant and accommodating after the shaky start.

I know this was high season but I am convinced that if we were just there as one family in a 2BR unit and didn't complain rather loudly we would have been in building 21.

Considering all of the hassle and the poor beach I will never go back to this Mayan Palace resort. We absolutely love the Grand Mayan in Acapulco which is why we took this exchange and hope to go back there and may try Nueva Vallarta but I will only go back to the Royal resorts for Cancun.:crash: :wall: :hi:

We have spent 8 weeks at the Grand Mayan - Riviera Maya on 4 different visits in the past 5 years. We are not owners and exchanged through SFX. We have also spent 2 weeks at the Grand Mayan - Nuevo Vallarta.

The GM - RM is our favorite timeshare resort by far in our 23 years of timesharing. We have stayed at many good resorts including the Royal Mayan in Cancun but the GM is our favorite. Yes, it is spread out but they have free shuttle service to all buildings and locations. I don't walk very well so we use the shuttles extensively. We have also eaten at all the different restaurants, room service, and deli. For the most part the food was pretty good and quite reasonable for a luxury resort. We have always had excellent service.

I agree that the beach is pretty bad but I don't care as that is not important for us. We have done the snorkeling thing and it is not at the beach. They take you in a boat quite a distance offshore.

I don't care about the T/S presentation as we never do presentations on vacation.

We stayed there in February in a two bedroom unit. Very nice room and great landscaping.
On the downside, pools were freezing. You really couldn't even use them. And we had to be in a room the farthest possible location from anything. No exageration, it took 15 to 20 minutes to get to the restaurants and pool areas. Fortunately, walking thru the beautiful grounds made it not so bad. Beach was rocky, but we loved spending time there at sunset lying on the lounges. Found Ellen's statement about the rude staff giving the SCUBA introduction in the pool interesting. Although we found everyone else very nice, had a problem with the people who do the SCUBA out on the beach hut. Talked with GM management about them and were told they are not employees of the GM, the company just contracts with GM for the activities. These people were very competitive even amoung themselves for bookings. Obviously work on commissions. They would tell you anything to get you to book, but didn't always deliver. Wasn't all bad tho. Did have one decent day with them (and one real bad day) before we starting using a dive shop in Puerto Morelos.
Place has some downsides, but, overall, I'd stay there in a second.

I forgot that the SCUBA & Kayak folks were not MP employees, but contractors. When we went to RM right after Hurricane Wilma, the guy was cleaning out the activity hut on the beach. He had his kayaks up in the rafters. He said that he contracted with the resort for that and to teach SCUBA lessons. There still is no excuse for him to be rude to potential customers.
