Hi all:
Can someone in the know give me an idea as to extra charges for gym, internet, etc at the GM for exchangers. I'm seeing plenty of weeks with RCI at decent rates (week points). We enjoy using the gym facilities, but would enjoy it less depending on the cost.
Thanks,
Steve

The internet is the same for owners or exchangers

The in room service is around $60 per week. I don't know on the Gym/Spa as they are no charge to us as owners.

I thought it was about $50-$60 for the week for the spa as well last spring, but I could be mistaken.

Of course, you could subject yourself to a "sales presentation", waste a good portion of a day, and get a discount if you wanted. Personally, I would rather be staked down over an ant hill before doing that on my vacation.

The internet was 950 pesos in Acapulco in January 2011. (We own there and paid it so that we could use Skype and Slingbox.) I have heard that the gym is $10 per day (maybe per person).

Thanks for all the info. Greg, is the $60 for housekeeping or is this a mandatory tipping program? $10 a day for the gym isn't too bad.
One other question, do the 1BR units have a washer and dryer?
Thanks,
Steve

The one bedroom units are basically hotel rooms. No kitchen and none of the rooms have washers or dryers.

I believe the $60 for "in room service" that Greg was talking about was the charge for in-room internet. There is no housekeeping fee.

And no, none of the units have a washer/dryer in them, but a guest laundry is available. For a small fee, you can just drop off your laundry, and the nice ladies there will wash and fold your clothes for you.

Wrong.

There are studio units, 1BR units and 2BR units. The 2BR units are a combination of a 1BR and a studio. The 1BR has a separate bedroom, and a living room / kitchen area. The kitchens do not have an oven or dishwasher, just a sink, small cooktop, microwave and apartment-sized refrigerator.

Actually, there are Hotel units (Master Room), 1 BDR units (Suite), and 2 BDR units (Master Suite). The Hotel unit is the lock-off of the 2 BDR. When people think they are getting a Studio, they expect a coffeemaker, microwave, and small frig. You do not get any of thes with a Hotel unit at the Mayan Palace or Grand Mayan.

Phyllis,

I just returned from staying at the Grand Bliss; the lock off units in the GB now have a coffee maker and an under the counter fridge - nothing else though kitchen wise.

That is good to know. When I saw the model in Acapulco last year, no coffeemaker or fridge.

I think they yielded to complaints; I actually didn't see it until 2 days before we left (we had the 2 bedroom). It was in one of the cabinet spaces that we weren't using.

My friend paid for the internet service in our room at GM-NV last month. The connection was terrible. And be advised, that exchanging (or purchasing a bonus week as we did) will get you a bad room. We have been timeshare owners & exchangers for almost 20 years. We have been to other GM's also. But we weren't allowed to check into our room at GM until they gave us the high pressure speech to attend the "free breakfast". Even after politely declining (repeatedly) the saleswoman smiled and let us know that as non-owners we were really on the bottom of the totem pole as far as getting a good unit. We spent the first two days housed very near the "King Tut" entrance and also above the piano bar on the first floor. Very noisy and with a great view of the parking ramp. :annoyed:

So it sounds like an exchanger who WILL NOT do a timeshare tour (me), will probably end up with a lousy room at the GM.
I'm now seeing lots of 1BRs for the Grand Bliss in NV. I've read that these units are bigger, fridge is smaller, area is quieter and that internet access is open and free. Can anyone confirm this and do the poorest, exchanger rooms in the GB have better views/balconies than the GM?
Steve

Grand Bliss room assignment

Your room will be assigned to you before you are asked to take a tour so room assignment has nothing to do with refusal to take a tour. After you check in you will be sent to another desk to get a resort bracelet and will be asked at that time to tour. Owners always get preference over exchangers for the most desireable rooms. Your chances for a better room will be predicated upon the number of owners checking in and staying at the resort. I would choose Grand Bliss over Grand Mayan. The building and rooms are a little more upscale and views on the non-ocean side may be better. The great water park at GM is available to you if you stay at GB but you will have to walk or take a cart over there to take advantage of it. I know that Wi-Fi is free at Grand Luxxe and may be at GB as well. Regardless of whether you stay at GB or GM, you will have a great time.

I agree with Johnsp particularly for an exchanger. The Grand Bliss would be my preference; Internet is free throughout the building (this always could change); it is a very short walk to the GM Water park; you will also have a better chance of getting a good view from either side; views from the 9th floor GB (where the models are located) are great from both sides.

One thing often overlooked are the spectacular gardens around the lagoons for walkers; the GB is the perfect location for that.

For a family with young kiddos or even teenagers, the GM might be better as it is the center of the pool action.

Hi all,
Thanks for all the feedback. We've now booked 3 weeks in Jan, 2012 at UVC Flamingos and then on to the Grand Bliss in NV for two more weeks. Looking forward to a most relaxing time. :)
