Getting rid of timeshares...do I lose my Bonvoy points?

I'm tired of paying huge maintenance fees (over $4,200/yr) so I am thinking about getting rid of my two timeshares.
Do I lose my existing Bonvoy points (930,000 of them) if I turn my two timeshares back over to Vistana? They are paid off/no liens and maintenance paid and current---next due Jan 2022. Can I convert my 2022 Options into Bonvoy points now and use them if I turn timeshares over before next maintenance assessments in January?

Bonvoy hotel points are separate from Vistana. You will keep your hotel points.

Your Maui timeshare has some value; don't give it away.

Whether Mission Hills has value depends on season. Winter season may be worth a couple thousand; shoulder and summer seasons are giveaways.

You can bring SO forward by paying MF in advance but I don't believe you can't do the same with converting to hotel points. You can only do that once you are in the use year. As they are tied to paying MFs are you actually trying to get the 2022 points without paying for them?

You can prepay your MFs and convert to Bonvoy points on Oct 1st for the next use year. There's no way to get the Bonvoy points without paying the MFs for that use year...

Yes, I was going to see if I could convert SO for 2022 to Bonvoy pts...and use them in 2022 even after I stop paying my 2022 MF (essentially get rid of timeshares). That makes sense that I can't do that. One response wrote that I could use my accumulated Bonvoy pts even if I got rid of Vistana timeshares as Vistana and Bonvoy are seperate. Do you agree?

Both are for any time of the year. Maui is not for Oceanview. I paid about $25k each for them around 2002 or 2003. Humm, maybe I'll think a bit more about selling vs. giving them away. Perhaps this Forum will have some tips on how to proceed, price, close, etc.

You need to sell and not give away. Find a good broker to sell them. DO NOT listen to anyone who calls you to help you "get rid of your timeshare maintenance fees." sellingtimeshares.net is a great place to contact. They are brokers. I would also consider talking to advantagevacation.com They have an office on Maui in the Cannery Mall. There is a video on the main page. I think that is the route I would take. But you are only going to get a few thousand. If you give it back to Vistana, they will resell for more than what you paid.

I cannot imagine getting rid of that. I would keep it because timeshares are dirt cheap right now and I see no other way for them to go but up in value in the future.

I wouldn't know for sure but as they are separate I would tend to agree. I wouldn't be happy if I sold my timeshares and lost my Bonvoy points, particularly as Bonvoy points are/can be accumulated completely independent of any timeshare ownership.

Back in my working days I earned a lot of miles on Delta, American and Southwest and Marriott Points. My philosophy was to use them before they got devalued. For example I remember sending my wife and kids to Burmuda for a week and 4 day ski trips outside of normal family vacation times and sending my Son to Marriott's Golf School for a week. All this while I stayed on the job. At the time Southwest were segments (not miles) and they were easy to sell. When we took family vacations I burned points by traveling First Class whenever possible. I must have been successful in my efforts as when we got divorced just prior to my retiring Points inventory was not an issue...

Vistana has no ability to “take back” your Bonvoy points regardless of anything you do or don’t do. Once Bonvoy points are in your account, they’re with Marriott and Vistana can’t touch them. There might be some rare situation where they have the contractual ability to “claw back” Bonvoy points — like if you got a big bonus of points for a timeshare purchase and then you never pay for it — but that’s not your situation, your weeks are paid for and your MFs are current. So I wouldn’t worry at all about your Bonvoy points.

But I agree with others that your weeks have value and I wouldn’t give them away. At the least, sell them, or consider renting them out and making a little money every year, unless that’s too burdensome.

If you bought in 2003 or so, your Maui unit must be WKORV, which not only has resale value but will be subject to ROFR from Vistana. If you sell it cheap or give it away, they will likely just take it for that price.

Your Bonvoy account and the 930K points is separate from your timeshare ownership. You keep them even if you sell or give away your timeshare.
