We always check 1 suitcase if/when we plan to do any hiking...
I once flew into SFO with a checked bag that had a tent and camping gear.
We also checked a duct-taped wrapped cooler with non-food supplies.
That was in my youth... nowadays, I camp at Hampton Inns and the like.

Made me laugh, i sure traveled differently in the old days.
I don’t know how we did it, but in the nineties (the first time I flew), we came home from my mother in laws with all her flatware ( I had grocery store giveaways) two boxes of expensive old silverware, her collection on dolls from all over the world, some china from the 1800’s, and a set of golf clubs from the 20’s or 30’s that had wooden shafts. We had moved her to a home, house was going on the market.

If you are referring to ME, who started this thread, I am not a troll. I got a lot of responses, most of which were very appreciated. So, if you think I was a troll, you need to recalibrate your "troll meter".

Scoop? I don't necessarily agree with everything that he posts, but some of his info is informative. If I don't agree with it, I just move on. But I respect his priveledge to post his opinions.

So, you've been a member for what ? ... 1 day? I've been a member here for about 11 years. So, I don't know if your post was directed at me or Scoop.

I am 74 y.o. and am in a physical decline. Things that I cannot control. Things that I am wrestling with emotionally and psychologically. I have macular degeneration (meaning I can't see or read signs very well and things aren't going to get better) and my muscle mass is declining - - and my wife is somewhat handicapped (a bunch of artificial joints and a botched surgery). That means that I need to lug all of my luggage and all of hers. Lugging 100 # of baggage (four pieces) by myself - - even if for short distances - - is much more difficult than it was 5 or 10 years ago. Wait till you get here to my age.

So, I hope that you weren't focused you post on ME ! If your post was focused on Scoop, I suggest that you give him a break. His posts are often imperious. But I don't take objection to his posts.

My comment was directed at the people responding in anger to ScoopKona - not at you. I enjoyed reading your post and suggestions since I also have issues traveling - and even posted a couple (what I hope) were helpful travel ideas.

The fact I've been here for 1 day and you've been here for 11 years does not change the fact I have been around the internet long enough to know when someone (ScoopKona) is exhibiting troll behavior ;) Have a good day.

I can remember flying when with checked bags over 50 lbs and no charge.
Plus flying, when you received a small snack, breakfast and lunch were all standard meals flying from Virginia to Orlando, Florida. . with Delta Airlines.LOL.

I can remember flying when...
They didn't check ID's, just the ticket... The name didn't matter.
You could sell, buy and trade tickets like it was a movie ticket.

--------------------------
I just bought a larger backpack to use for my stuff, so...
Now, all I need to do at the airport is wear it and pull our
folding dolly (w-DW's folding transport chair and suitcase).
<keeping my fingers crossed>

DRI: The Point at Poipu, 3 deeded weeks, 1 of which is in The Club.
I remember when students could fly standby at greatly reduced prices.

I can remember when my carry on bag, was all I could afford. Plus, I had to wear a suit on the plane for business travel. Times have changed.

My wife and I fly to Hawaii EOY and it is growing more difficult to do so.

My wife has mobility issues and strength issues. She used to be able to pull her own roll-around. But not any longer. So, I end up pulling the baggage for both of us - - pulling two suitcases, a personal item and a laptop case. Total weight? Over 100 pounds. While I can still do that, it is getting more difficult. I'm wondering WHEN I can no longer do that what will we do? Sell our Hawaii timeshare?

I'm wondering if there might be another solution. Has anyone heard about an airport "porter" service? I suppose that I could pre-ship my bags, but that adds another layer of complexity and delay getting access to the luggage and adds one more thing to take care of before departure.

Suggestions? What are other seniors doing?
My Husband and I used to go to Hawaii every year until Covid, now I’m caring for my elderly Father so travel is on hold for now, but when we would go I would mail a large flat rate box via the post office, with my heaviest items and packed as full as I could and still close the box. I would call the timeshare where we were staying and told them to expect the bag, (I had previously asked if it would be alright to do this) . The one checked bag we shared was considerably lighter. Since there was a washer and dryer in the condo we didn’t need that many outfits.
I also mailed most of the same items home. The price for the flat rate boxes was about $23.00. If you use a bigger box @ regular price it’s considerably more like $50.00+
Good luck
