Hi
Recently I had to get my signature notarized, for transfer of ownership of a timeshare. First I went to the bank, long line ahead of me. So I went to Amscot they wouldn’t do it because I needed two witnesses and the employees said they couldn’t do it.
Next stop the public library the notary there said I had to bring two witnesses. I reached out to two people in the library that agreed to be my witnesses. So I was able to get my signature notarized. I never needed two witnesses before. Have any of you ?
The main thing is I now only have one timeshare and plan to be happy with that.
Happy New Year!

Yes, it is common, and, in a lot of states, they require two witnesses now. However, usually anyone will witness as it is just their signature, no id is required. I have found different notaries do things different and had one force a witness to show id before.... but they should allow anyone to witness.

I've never needed any witnesses when I've had things notarized. The last few I've had done at a bank.

Usually did at the bank, but was told they don’t for Timeshares anymore.

Many states require two witnesses when having a deed notarized for a timeshare transfer. It depends on the state /county you are recording. i.e. Florida, SC, and many other states require two witnesses in addition to the notary.

I just completed paperwork for a deedback to Vistana. They required 2 witnesses and the notary for my signature only. We dragged my BIL and SIL down to the bank. They showed their ID's but did not need their signatures notarized.

When I was in Wisconsin, at Christmas Mountain Resort, I needed a paper notarized. I called front desk and they said the notary was in sales when I called sales, they said they didn’t have a notary. now you know they have a notary to close sales. They just can’t help lying. Anyhow, I had a test at the hospital, and the office notarized for me.

Florida deeds require two witnesses. Was the timeshare in Florida?

Florida requires witnesses. I’ve sold a couple of DVC contracts and that is the process.

My mother passed away 2 years ago and I was the executor of her estate. So you can imagine the amount of notarizations I needed to get done. I stopped going to my bank (Chase) b/c they were constantly questioning what I was notarizing. Way out of bounds in my opinion for being a notary. So I started going to the UPS store and paying $10 a pop.

Last month I needed documents for my Vistana deedback to be notarized. UPS store wouldn't do it b/c it was outside their training as a notary. Hmmmmm. So I found a real estate office who did it for me and charged $50 in the process.

A notary is simply verifying your identity as the signor, verifying you are signing of your own free will and witnessing your signature. They shouldn't be scrutinizing the document itself. They really only need to know what the document is so they can document it in their notary journal. Not sure why UPS Store would not have training. Their study for the notary commission was really all they needed. Notaries aren't signing their name to a contract, just notarizing a signature. Seems Chase and even UPS Store are busybodies.

Exactly my point. I don’t need a bank manager questioning the ins & outs of a trust .

I could see a bank questioning certain transactions related to a trust, especially if any of the funds related to the trust are held at that bank.

The public library notarized it free. Just had me get two witnesses, who luckily were at the library and kindly obliged. I had documents notarized before, never had to go thru such scrutiny. Glad to have this all done now. Letting another TUG member enjoy the timeshare.

I have the same problem. My bank notary use to have 2 of their tellers to sign as witnesses but over the last 2 years they have told me that they can't supply witnesses. That's the message I received from 2 different banks which I have accounts with.

It is difficult for me to find witnesses who I can use. I work from home so my co-workers are not close by and I'm not that close with my neighbors (plus they work outside the house).

I guess it's a safety measure to require witnesses to account for people who may forge their ID and these witnesses are supposed to know you but there is way for the notary to validate that these witnesses know you (all you have to do is find anyone who will sign for you even if they don't know you).

I may have to go with using one of the online notaries where your witnesses can sign online. This would at least not require anyone to have to physically be with me at the notary office.

After I sign, the notary at my bank signs and stamps the document, then goes and finds two people to witness my signature.

I go to the UPS Store. They usually have at least three employees around and if not they will ask another customer or get one of the folks from CVS in the same shopping center to sign as a witness.
